    England 1-0 Lithuania

Ouch! Dele Alli is crunched by a late tackle near the halfway line, Vaidas Slavickas's studs recklessly ploughing into the England midfielder's left ankle.

    England 1-0 Lithuania

Normal service resumed. England are back on the attack.

Goalscorer Jermain Defoe sees half a gap opening up. He shoots... he doesn't score. Shot flashes by the left-hand post.

Lithuania are struggling to get out of the house. Hang on, they have spotted an open window. The away team wriggle out of the own half into England territory, only for striker Fedor Cernych to end the move by dragging a shot well wide. Poor.

    England 1-0 Lithuania

Gareth Southgate's celebration was good to see. Plenty of passion. Wonder what he'd do for a World Cup-winning goal. Probably a Jose-style slide down the touchline on his knees.

Well that's one selection fully justified. England manager Gareth Southgate gave a fist-pump of triumph as the man he selected to break down Lithuania did just that.

You don't lose it - that was a trademark Jermain Defoe finish.

Don't fret Gareth. Raheem Sterling looks to be fine after some treatment on that knock. That sponge really is magic. The Manchester City speedster jogs back on to the pitch.

    England 1-0 Lithuania

Uh oh. A bit of concern for Gareth Southgate - and Pep Guardiola - as Raheem Sterling goes down in some bother. On comes the physio...

It was great pace from Raheem Sterling. He ran at people. He put the ball just outside the six-yard box. A predator as always, Jermain Defoe puts it in the net.

Defoe puts England aheadpublished at 21 mins

    England 1-0 Lithuania

Jermain Defoe does not need asking twice. Superb work on the left flank by Raheem Sterling bamboozles the Lithuania defence, allowing him to pick out Defoe who peels off his marker.

The striker does the rest, precisely converting side-footed from about 10 yards.

And that's his first England goal in four years and four days since an easy win against San Marino.

    England 0-0 Lithuania

Hurrah! England have their first bona fide chance. Jermain Defoe slides in to a through ball but is denied by the keeper's legs.

We know he is deadly in front of goal. He'll get one today.

    England 0-0 Lithuania

A few jeers from the Wembley crowd as Egidijus Vaitkunas goes tumbling under little contact from Raheem Sterling near the halfway line.

    WWE stuff that. Very theatrical.

And attack out wide is exactly what they do. Michael Keane pings one out to Kyle Walker, who acrobatically controls and then delivers into the mixer. Lithuania right-back Egidijus Vaitkunas is well positioned to head out with Jermain Defoe lurking.

Lithuania are parking the bus but they're not camped on the edge of their area. There is space. I'd like to see Sterling or Lallana or either full-back attack the space out wide.

    England 0-0 Lithuania

Not sure how many Lithuanians are sat inside Wembley, but they are making a racket. They will be happy enough with how they side have set up - organised and compact.

Can't see them holding out for 90 minutes though...

  16. Postpublished at 13 mins

    England 0-0 Lithuania

Much better from England. Sharper, more urgency.

Kyle Walker pops up at the back stick, threatening to nod  in, only for Lithuania left-back Vaidas Slavickas to clear under pressure.

Then Adam Lallana slaps a tame shot straight at Ernestas Setkus from outside of the box.

  17. Postpublished at 12 mins

    England 0-0 Lithuania

Ryan Bertrand gets a whack in a bodily part that no man wants to get a whack, but gets to feet to drill in a low cross from the left. One of about eight yellow-shirted Lithuania defenders boots clear.

Gee‏: Anyone moaning about Defoe hasn't a clue, goal scorer in any side, injuries might mean he goes next year, can't see in the future.

Michael Tay-Kerr: Rashford isnt only the future, he should be the present. Disappointing a 34 year old's picked ahead of him against weak opposition

Jermain Defoe has barely had a kick so far. In fact, other than the kick-off, he has only managed one touch in the opening 10 minutes.

At the moment England players are having three or four touches when maybe they should have two. You have to try to kill the game off - go 1-0 up or 2-0 up then you can play three or four touches.
