England's friendly against Germany in Dortmund on Wednesday was effectively a testimonial for veteran striker Lukas Podolski on his international farewell - with an atmosphere to match in the normally vibrant Signal Iduna Park.

It's all been a bit testimonial here at Wembley today with England on cruise control but the introduction of Jamie Vardy and Marcus Rashford, in particular, has created a bit of a buzz.

Jamey C Barron:  Why are England sluggish with arguably the fastest team available?! Full roast dinner pre-match

Phil Robson: We have no pace, no aggression, no physical presence. No wonder we couldn't score against Iceland in the euros

Craig Smith: Defoe and Sterling were by far the biggest goal threats in this game. Pace is pointless against a team not playing a highline

    England 1-0 Lithuania

England need a rocket. Luckily they have got a couple on the bench. Roadrunners Jamie Vardy and Marcus Rashford are summoned from the bench.

Off go scorer Jermain Defoe and Raheem Sterling.

And Lithuania are nearly punished. England break forward quickly, Adam Lallana cynically dragged back by Arturas Zulpa. Think that's what they call a 'professional' foul. Yellow.

    England 1-0 Lithuania

Lithuania are showing a bit of adventure, enjoying a decent spell of possession in the England half. Well, relatively decent. But they could be opened up easier than a can of tuna if they are not careful...

    England 1-0 Lithuania

Lithuania captain Fedor Cernych is livid with the referee - he thinks his team should have a corner. And he has a point. The ball appears to come off Kyle Walker before going out of play..

England have to be careful. They've got to keep that concentration to make sure this doesn't slip. They're a little bit static at the moment.

Jermain Defoe is one of the only players who doesn't look nervous. He hasn't played for England for a long time but Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain looks nervous and has given the ball away three or four times. Defoe looks confident on the ball.

Joshua Byers Warner: They all need tutoring on how to pass that ball fast and accurately because they are passing it way to slow.

Jonny Duchezeau: "Raheem Sterling should do better" you hear that at least once a game

Andy White: England limping towards qualification before leaving the World Cup with barely a whimper.

Now it is the turn of Joe Hart's opposite number to get his gloves dirty.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain nudges the ball into an inch of space about 25 yards out, then tries to bend one into the far corner. But it is not far enough away from Ernestas Setkus's grasp.

A wake-up call for England. Nerijus Valskis is allowed space from a back-tracking home defence, his left-footed shot from 15 yards forcing Joe Hart into a sweat.

Looks like England have been listening to Terry Butcher. They have looked livelier at the start of this second half, getting the ball out wide more.

England have been crowded out. There's a lack of space and the touch has to be right. If it's not quite right then players will be bearing down on you. Moving the ball from one side to the other certainly helped England score their only goal. I want to see a lot more of that and see better crosses from the wider positions and Bertrand and Walker getting beyond their players.

Could have been two! Perhaps should have been.

Raheem Sterling ghosts in at the far post to meet a deep cross from the left, but sort of trips over his feet. The result? Sterling bundles the ball straight at Lithuania keeper Ernestas Setkus.

Bloomin' eck! Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is completely taken out by a body check from Lithuania defender Egidijus Vaitkunas near the halfway line. Yellow card.

That's fine if this was rugby league's Challenge Cup final. But it isn't.

    England 1-0 Lithuania

Joe Hart and Jermain Defoe are the first two players to emerge from the tunnel. The rest aren't too far behind. Most of the crowd are still in the concourse though. Loads of red seats.

    Lithuania get us rock'n'rolling again...

It was good play from England for the goal. They got down that right-hand side a few moments earlier and then the left-hand side for the goal. It was the first time England got in behind the Lithuania backline.

Ben Skinner:  Spurs fan here. Love Defoe. Really enjoying seeing him back in an England shirt

Ian Ward: Jermain Defoe was an interesting, unexpected choice. The old geezer knows where the goal is. Excellent

Chris Baldwin: Is this a team that could really make it to the latter stages of next years World Cup? Stranger things have happened I suppose
