The latest reports reaching us are that West Ham are now very close to signing Simone Zaza from Juventus for an eye-watering, trouser-scrunching £24m.

    (TWENTY-FOUR MILLION!)

You may remember Zaza from his penalty miss for Italy at Euro 2016.

Michael Bairstow: Bye bye Europe. It wasn't fun while it lasted. More Saturday games at the Olympic Stadium though..... every cloud.

Going out to these opponents the second year running is a shock. But the West Ham fans know the game and I think some of them will be quietly happy. That's six fewer fixtures between now and Christmas.

But with this venue it still would have been nice to play a few different opponents, to have had that experience of European football.

John, Milton Keynes: Why are we bothered about going out? It's a sub-standard competition and we haven't got the squad to compete in it and the Premier League, as has been proven tonight!

Adam: We're going to have the nicest ground in the Championship on this form. Useless.

The timing of the goal really did not help - it gave Astra something to hold on to. And I don't think we should ignore how well they defended to earn this win. They were really stubborn.

What disappointed me most about West Ham was that, when under pressure to score, they resorted to long balls forward. It needed a bit of intricacy and creation. They sorely missed Dimitri Payet and Manuel Lanzini.

In the long run I guess it may be to West Ham's advantage that they have six fewer games - at least - to pack into the schedule. And they will have more games on a Saturday now.

But I think everyone at the club was looking forward to a prolonged European adventure. That is now in the can.

That was a very poor display from the start by West Ham. they have plenty of key players out but Slaven Bilic will feel let down by that performance.
