West Ham 0-1 Astra Giurgiu (Agg: 1-2)

The game has really come to life. West Ham's defensive deficiencies come to light again as a collision almost lets in Filipe Teixeira, but Winston Reid saves the day with a superb last-gasp tackle.

If West Ham go 2-0 down on the night it will be a long way back.

That was more difficult to do - Antonio headed it almost to the corner flag. How has he not managed to score? It was a fantastic save to deny Jonathan Calleri too.

Now we've got an atmosphere. And a real game on our hands.

  4. GREAT SAVE!published at 54 mins

West Ham 0-1 Astra Giurgiu (Agg: 1-2)

    What a save!

West Ham should be level as Jonathan Calleri meets a cross with his shoulder, he doesn't get enough power into it and Silviu Lung is able to claw it out.On the follow-up Sam Byram flashes a shot across goal and Michail Antonio can only turn it over the top.

Junior Morais and Gokhan Tore have a battle on the touchline and it ends with the Astra skipper going into the book.

The noise increases as West Ham get the crowd going with a spell of intense pressure, winning the ball back high up the pitch and then forcing a corner which Angelo Ogbonna heads comfortably on to keeper Silviu Lung.

Now West Ham have got two strikers on they can play a little longer. It looks like they've gone to 4-4-2 with Enner Valencia and Jonathan Calleri dovetailing. The crowd seem to be getting behind the home side more - that's good to see. But still Slaven Bilic looks frustrated.

It is a bright start to the second half - but from the visitors. Denis Alibec rolls away from Winston Reid to get into the area but his cross is hacked out by Sam Byram, before Alibec goes down and hopefully asks for a penalty. No dice.

Enner Valencia is on at half-time, he replaces midfielder Havard Nordtveit. Should open the game up.

It's gone very dark at West Ham all of a sudden. Can they re-ignite their European season in the next 45 minutes? If they score once without reply we have extra time. Nobody wants that. Surely.

That was a chant sung by West Brom fans when I used to report on them in about 2007. Filipe Teixeira was a classy operator in the Championship and he looks to be decent in the Romanian league too. He's 35 now. Will his goal knock West Ham out?

Adamski: Only West Ham could have a Romanian bogey team. Four televised games this season and they have been painful to watch. COYI!

  15. FLASHBACKpublished at 20:40 British Summer Time 25 August 2016

Here's what happened in August 2015...

West Ham were knocked out of the Europa League in the third qualifying round following a 2-1 defeat by Romanian side Astra Giurgiu to lose 4-3 on aggregate.

After letting a two-goal lead slip in the first leg, debutant Manuel Lanzini put the much-changed Hammers ahead.

But two goals in four minutes from Astra skipper Constantin Budescu earned the Romanian side victory.

Slaven Bilic was clearly a very unhappy man at half-time as he trudged away down the tunnel. He may be missing many of his key attacking players but he's got to expect better from his side.

What a tremendous goal. Sam Byram was encouraged to go forward by the fans just before half-time - but he was out of position as Giurgiu broke two on two. Filipe Teixeria provides the coolest of finishes.

West Ham have been a bit flat. The fans were expecting more.

West Ham are booed off. A poor, listless, lifeless, largely pointless display so far.

So as it stands West Ham need a goal to take us to extra-time. Two to win the tie.

    Filipe Teixeira

Well then! That's a big cat amongst the pigeons as Astra hit West Ham on the counter-attack. Reece Burke is caught out high up the pitch and the Romanians have a three-on-two breakaway. They play it perfectly to find former West Brom man Filipe Teixeira breaking into the area and his left-foot finish across goal is perfect.
