    England 3-0 Scotland

Scotland captain Darren Fletcher: "That wasn't a 3-0 game. It was a hard fought battle.

"Forget about the last 10 minutes, we were out on our last legs and didn't want to concede a fourth or fifth goal.

"We had a right good go and had just as many chances but England took theirs.

"After the effort we put in to the game, to come away with a 3-0 defeat it is hard to take. People who watched that game and understand football will realise it was not a 3-0 game but we lost. We will pick up and go again.

Asked about Gordon Strachan's future: "We believe in the manager. We enjoy working for him. We know how passionate he is, as a manager doesn't deserve that."

  2. 'No clear answer to the Strachan question'published at 22:05 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2016

    England 3-0 Scotland

    Richard Wilson
    BBC Scotland

Gordon Strachan, in his moment of greatest scrutiny as Scotland manager, committed fully to being unreserved. He played Leigh Griffiths, for so long the player most commonly cited when the manager's stubbornness was being questioned.

Yet the consequence of the result, the reflection on whether or not Strachan's time has run its course, is not a direct response to this game but the diminishing form and authority of a side that peaked against the Republic of Ireland in November 2014.

England were too powerful in the end. Scotland's performance was not as meek or listless as it was in Slovakia last month - and the players clearly continue to respond to him - but which display would Scotland bring to their next competitive fixture against Slovenia in March next year if Strachan is still in charge? This game did not provide a clear answer, which in itself perhaps says enough.

  3. "I want to go away and reflect"published at 22:00 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2016

    England 3-0 Scotland

England manager Gareth Southgate speaking to ITV: "We caused problems from ourselves. We want to play out from the back and were sloppy in that area. It is something to improve on. We caused our own problems but once we were through that phase on the fielder some of our use of the ball was fantastic.

"The team in an attacking sense played well. We played with an interchange of positions and there were some superb individual performances and we managed the game well towards the end."

Asked if he think he will now be offered the England manager's job permanently: "I will enjoy tonight. I was asked to take the job for four games and to keep the country top of the group. Tonight was important for the supporters and the team. It was important they came through a pressure game, especially at Wembley."

And asked if he wants the job: "I want time to go away and reflect. I have loved doing it but it is an opportunity for everyone to have time. The FA can decide what they want to do."

We're building for the next Euros and we're not even halfway through this campaign. That's the reality now.

    Germany in the goals

We had plenty of goals across today's 10 European World Cup qualifiers, not least in Rimini where Germany predictably filled their boots in an 8-0 dismantling of San Marino.

Former Arsenal midfielder Serge Gnabry marked his full Germany debut with a hat-trick as the Group C leaders eased to a one-sided win. Elsewhere in the group Czech Republic defeated Norway 2-1.

In Paris, France pulled three points clear at the top of Group A with a 2-1 win over Sweden at Stade de France, Paul Pogba and Dimitri Payet with the goals for the hosts.

In Group F, Slovakia crushed Lithuania 4-0 with former Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel among their goalscorers in Trnava, while Slovenia were narrow 1-0 winners in Malta.

In Group E, Poland won 3-0 away to Romania in a match delayed by 10 minutes after a flare exploded near Poland striker Robert Lewandowski. The Bayern Munich striker escaped injury and added two late goals for good measure.

Also in Group E, Denmark beat Kazakhstan 4-1, with Tottenham's Christian Eriksen among the scorers, and Armenia defeated Montenegro 3-2.

    England 3-0 Scotland

England are unbeaten in their last 33 qualifying matches (W25 D8) since a 1-0 defeat to Ukraine in October 2009.

That is either high praise for England or an indictment of the state of qualifying campaigns.

    Steven Thompson
Former Scotland striker on BBC Sportsound

I don't think Gordon Strachan can continue. That's back-to-back 3-0s. Find me a positive. There are none. The heads went down like they did in Slovakia and that's a problem.

Gareth Southgate says exactly the same as Jermaine - they caused their own problems by trying to play out from the back.

  12. 'England were clinical'published at 21:51 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2016

    England 3-0 Scotland

    Jermaine Jenas
Former England midfielder on 5 live

Playing out from the back could have cost England.

It took them a while to wake up but once England got that fire in their belly there was only going to be one winner.

Being clinical won the game. 3-0 flatters England but if Forrest sticks that one away early in the second half, it would have been a lot more difficult for England.

  13. Rooney on the money?published at 21:50 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2016

    England 3-0 Scotland

Wayne Rooney assisted his first England goal since November 2015 (Dele Alli v France). It was also the first time Rooney had assisted a headed goal since September 2009 (Steven Gerrard v Croatia).

  14. Wasteful Scots down and outpublished at 21:48 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2016

    England 3-0 Scotland

    Willie Miller
Former Scotland defender on BBC Sportsound

The last half hour was embarrassing. The substitutions gave us no cause for optimism. We created a number of good openings and couldn't take them, while England were clinical. We have fabulous chances on 48 and 49 minutes, then 50 - bang - England score for 2-0.

The quality is not there in front of goal and it's definitely not there in defence. This game is not the problem though. It was the draw with Lithuania and the loss in Slovakia that did the damage.

  15. Who's on the list?published at 21:48 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2016

    England 3-0 Scotland

BBC Radio 5 live Scottish football reporter Roddy Forsyth: "I would imagine Gordon Strachan would not be here for Scotland's next match.

"Names that will be touted are David Moyes, Malky Mackay and Paul Lambert - well, he would have been but he has been named Wolves manager this week."

  16. "I don't get many headers"published at 21:47 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2016

    England 3-0 Scotland

England goalscorer Adam Lallana speaks to ITV: "We started sloppily and said a few things to one another at half time. We got the goals in the second half at the right time and 3-0 looks more comfortable than the game suggests.

"I don't get many headers but it was more about the cross, there was pace on it and I just had to guide it."

On Gareth Southgate getting the manager's job permanently: "He has given good stability. He has not had much time with us. It's not in our hands, we just do as well as we can and tonight was a good three points."

Dean Craze: Give Southgate the job, I like his passion. It's a risk but who isn't a risk?

Owen Dale: 3-0 shows how much Scottish football has gone backwards since last competitive meeting than English move forwards

Dyllun Vadher: Scoreline masks an average ENG performance. Sterling's poor decision-making. Not why 2 x CDM's required against Scotland.

    England 3-0 Scotland

I do not think Gordon Strachan is the problem.

Scotland have had a lot of managers over the last 20 years and they are not all bad managers.

That was as good as Scotland could have played. 3-0, it is unfair, but there is no embarrassment. England are a decent side and were clinical.

  20. Brunt shines on returnpublished at 21:43 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2016

    Northern Ireland 4-0 Azerbaijan

BBC Sport's Alvin McCaig: "Chris Brunt is announced as the man-of-the-match minutes after finding the bottom corner with a fizzing strike. A comeback to remember for Brunt after missing the Euro 2016 finals and a wonderful night for Northern Ireland.

"The rain may still be falling but few care as the team is cheered and clapped off the pitch. This could be a pivotal result in the race for a play-off place and for Northern Ireland the chance to qualify for a second straight major tournament."
