The pattern is set. England use their centre-backs to play out, and Gary Cahill is closed down and ends up putting it out of play.

    Robbie Savage
Ex-Wales midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

We could be five years ago watching England. It is so dull and boring to watch, one paced.

    They are two bad teams.

After the full-time whistle Robbie will be on BBC Radio 5 live's football phone-in 6-0-6 taking your calls on tonight's action.

  8. Will Scotland get more chances?published at 20:43 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2016

    England 1-0 Scotland

    Willie Miller
Former Scotland defender on BBC Sportsound

It was such a quality cross from Kyle Walker for the goal. Grant Hanley was unlucky. He did well to block the shot and he was winded and no one else was able to get across and cover Sturridge.

Other than that, I think England have been very average.

We've had two great chances to get back into it. All Hanley has to do is head it down and he's not even close to the target. Then Snodgrass makes the perfect run and Griffiths goes for the strike. Bad decision-making. Are we going to get more chances like that? I don't know.

  9. European round-uppublished at 20:43 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2016

Half-time whistles are blowing across Europe in tonight's nine World Cup qualifiers and after the early flurry of goals we brought you earlier there's not an awful lot more to add.

In Group C, Germany head into the beak in Rimini with a 3-0 lead over San Marino, Jonas Hector adding to goals inside the first 10 minutes by Sami Khedira and Serge Gnabry. Also in Group C, Czech Republic lead Norway 1-0.

In Group F, Slovakia have cruised into a 3-0 lead against Lithuania, who sat in second place coming into this round of fixtures but won't be there much longer. Former Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel is among the goalscorers in Trnava. Also in Group F, Malta are holding their own in a goalless stalemate with Slovenia.

In Group E, Poland lead Romania 1-0 through Kamil Grosicki while Denmark lead Kazakhstan 2-1, Tottenham's Christian Eriksen scoring a penalty to put the Danes ahead.

The Group A meeting between France and Sweden at Stade de France is goalless.

BBC Sport's Alvin McCaig in Belfast: "The second goal, a West Brom combo of Brunt delivery and McAuley finish, was reward for a half of terrific football from the hosts. High pressing and crisp passing have seen Northern Ireland dominate - the Windsor faithful are happy and Michael O'Neill will want more of the same after the break."

    England 1-0 Scotland

    Jermaine Jenas
Former England midfielder on 5 live

There have been no surprises for England. They will have expected Scotland to come and play this intense football.

Once it settled down England's quality showed through and Scotland struggled in the last period to get a real grasp on the game.

England playing out from the back does not look natural. England's centre-midfielders (Henderson and Dier) think they are better on the ball than they are.

Scotland are a team that are expecting England to make a mistake.

  15. Passing to victory?published at 20:36 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2016

    England 1-0 Scotland

England perhaps edging it because of a touch (we stress a touch) more quality.

The Three Lions have completed 85% of their passes while Scotland have completed just 69%.

Neither side offering a lesson in keep ball but the home side are doing enough it seems.

For quality England have had the edge but for fighting spirit Scotland have been matching England.

Scotland are playing one dimensional stuff and closing England down at the back.

Far from Scotland's worst first half under Gordon Strachan in recent times, but the stark reality is that they trail and unfortunately a valiant defeat is not good enough tonight.

England v Scotland wasn't much whack in the first half in 1996 either. The second half was brilliant though.

Just need to bring Jamie Redknapp on and get Gazza into space.
