That would have been the worry for this Scotland team, who have had a difficult time recently.

Completely the wrong decision from Griffiths. Just roll Snodgrass in. Another big opportunity goes a-begging.

There's no doubt Gareth Southgate's side have seen more of the ball and edged territory.

After 28 minutes they have played 158 passes to 81 by the away side.

No player on the field is busier than Jordan Henderson with 32 touches.

Again Scotland press high and get rewards as Wayne Rooney and Jordan Henderson make a total hash of a one-two and Leigh Griffiths is running in on goal from halfway.

Robert Snodgrass is motoring up on his left - but the Celtic man shoots, wastefully from 30 yards. Send him in!

The noisy neighbours have gone a little quiet after that goal. Scotland had started in encouraging fashion but can't afford to miss chances to equalise as good as the one Grant Hanley has just put off target.

Gareth Southgate showed faith in Daniel Sturridge by starting with him despite his shortage of first-team action at Liverpool and what a reward.

It was an instinctive, stooping header that gave Craig Gordon no chance. England had just started to get on top and that's a real blow to Scotland and manager Gordon Strachan after those promising early phases.

You will not get many clearer chances than that. 

That is terrible. It has got to be on target.  

Scotland have reacted well to going behind, and that is a chance! Grant Hanley is left totally unattended 10 yards out, free header - he shuts his eyes and pops it 10 rows back.

Dearie me that is a golden opportunity! 

A few early goals around Europe tonight and it's no surprise to report Germany already have two of the blighters against hapless San Marino in Group C.

Strikes by Sami Khedira and Serge Gnabry had the Germans cruising inside 10 minutes and the punishment is unlikely to stop there. Also in Group C, Czech Republic lead Norway 1-0.

In Group F - England and Scotland's group - Slovakia have raced into a 2-0 lead against Lithuania, who sat in an unexpected second place coming into this round of fixtures. Adam Nemec and Juraj Kucka with the goals in Trnava.  

In Group E, Poland lead Romania 1-0 through Kamil Grosicki while Denmark and Kazakhstan are level at 1-1.

That is all you want your number nine to do. It was a fantastic cross and Strurridge got across the defender. 

It was a brilliant goal. Sturridge had no time to react but he flicked it perfectly into the corner.
