There is no obvious tactical method from England because Scotland are breaking it up so much. It is closer to rugby than football since it is tackle, tackle, tackle.

The way England are playing, Scotland must feel they'll get another couple of chances to get back in this game. The problem is, when England get into the final third, they look very capable of scoring again themselves and that would surely kill Scotland off.

    England 1-0 Scotland

John Stones goes for a wander into the Scottish half, he runs into a man in pink, Adam Lallana picks it up and spreads it out wide, where Raheem Sterling then runs headlong into an opponent.

    Forrest Gump football.

  5. England turn to Stonespublished at 20:30 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2016

    England 1-0 Scotland

After 41 minutes, John Stones has played 48 passes - the most in the England team. He has completed 94% of them but, tellingly, they are all performed deep on the pitch. Only five have been in the Scotland half.

Playing well, but losing. We've all had times when our sides have suffered that.

The worry for Scotland may be that England can play much better than this. On paper, at least.

  8. Frustration for Scotspublished at 20:29 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2016

It's frustrating because the game plan has worked pretty well, apart from that one lapse. Scotland have kept England pretty quiet and have managed to create a few decent openings.

Every time England play out from the back they lose possession.

  11. England get a let-offpublished at 20:27 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2016

    England 1-0 Scotland

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Wembley

England will be very grateful for that horrendous piece of decision making by Leigh Griffiths when he did not play in Robert Snodgrass. It was a great opportunity for Scotland.

Southgate's side seem intent on playing out from the back - and if we are being kind we could describe their efforts so far as clunky.

    England 1-0 Scotland

The Scottish fans are in fine voice as their men in pink continue to make England sweat in possession. That is a good move from the hosts though, Wayne Rooney actually running past an opponent and breaking into the penalty area. he squares it - and it's well cut out.

    Gareth McAuley

Football can be an easy game. Chris Brunt bends in a brilliant free-kick, head high and 100mph, Gareth McAuley stretches and thumps a header into the roof of the net.

  15. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 37 mins

    England 1-0 Scotland

A second muted penalty appeal for England as Danny Rose charges into the area on the overlap, Robert Snodgrass works back to track him and ends up catching him on the calf. Rose goes down - the referee waves him to his feet.

Scotland fancy that they can get Leigh Griffiths in behind Gary Cahill on the break, Ikechi Anya cuts out a Wayne Rooney flick and instantly the ball is boomed in behind the Chelsea centre-half. Cahill does well to head it back this time.

    England 1-0 Scotland

Scotland's James Morrison is currently watching on for large spells, just seven touches (pictured).

Daniel Sturridge has the same number but ultimately his goal was key. The Scots completing 75% of their passes early on, England 85%.

    Northern Ireland 1-0 Azerbaijan

BBC Sport's Alvin McCaig: "Kyle Lafferty's name rings out around Windsor Park as celebrations continue after his clinical opener. Forget about his club form, the big striker is Northern Ireland's talisman and a double against San Marino last month is followed by his 20th international goal. The Azerbaijan defence is breached for the first time in four qualifiers."

Gordon Strachan will be pleased, I would have thought. His side have been impressive in their energy and work-rate, it's just a lack of quality in front of goal. Personified as Darren Fletcher sidesteps his man and shoots wildly over the top.

England are caught in possession in their back four again. It's not happening. Get it in the channels!
