Former Northern Ireland winger Stuart Elliott on BBC Radio Ulster: "We started well and on the front foot but Croatia can cut you open. That's the difference between average sides and the top quality sides."

England ahead at the interval and there will be aspects that will please manager Gareth Southgate. Jesse Lingard and Raheem Sterling have looked lively in attack while Spain have yet to seriously test goalkeeper Joe Hart.

  3. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:48 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2016

    England 1-0 Spain

Warm applause greets the half-time whistle as England go into the break ahead.

After a good opening 20 minutes England lost their composure when Adam Lallana went off. In end there were more bookings than shots on goal - four cards to two shots, both of which were from England players.

    Northern Ireland 0-2 Croatia

One minute of added time. Can Northern Ireland use it wisely? Almost. The men in green win the ball back inside the Croatian half, skipper Niall McGinn driving forward. But his pass towards Paddy McNair is handled and they win a free-kick about 30 yards out. Up goes Gareth McAuley...

What a waste! The free-kick is overhit and the Croatia keeper easily gathers.

    England 1-0 Spain

That Jamie Vardy chance was a better moment for England, but they've been few and far between since Adam Lallana went off. England appear to be missing the Liverpool's midfielder composure on the ball.

Fortunately, Spain haven't offered much of an attacking threat. Aritz Aduriz hasn't really had a sniff of the ball.

With little to shout about on the pitch, the atmosphere has gone a bit flat. You wouldn't know it was a sell-out at Wembley.

Someone call the cops. This is criminal. Northern Ireland win a corner as they look to regain a foothold - but Oliver Norwood clunks the ball out of play on its way into the box.

Let's not forget Northern Ireland are giving their second string a chance to impress tonight. Few of them are, however. About five minutes for the home side to claw their way back into this game before a breather.

    England 1-0 Spain

Good from England as they once again find space down the left. Raheem Sterling curls in a low pass behind the defence but the ball is just beyond Jamie Vardy's reach. Cesar Azpilicueta puts it behind for a corner, from which Vardy shoots just wide. So close to ending his 14-game drought.

    England 1-0 Spain

John Stones needs a good game after some poor decision-making against Scotland. Unfortunately, that tendency strikes again as he attempts to play the ball out of defence, clipping a pass to Eric Dier, who is immediately put under pressure by two Spain attackers. Poor from Stones, and Dier tells him as much, wagging his finger at him in frustration.

Too easy. Northern Ireland decide to play musical statues at a Croatia corner. Matej Mitrovic peels off the near post to flick on the set-piece and Duje Cop also escapes his marker to nod in.

Two chances, two goals. Clinical. Michael O'Neill chomps even harder on his minty gum.

  17. FA Cup shock on the cardspublished at 20:34 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2016

Non-league Eastleigh are on course to pull off the biggest shock of the first round. They lead 2-0 at League One Swindon at half-time.

The lowest-ranked team left in the competition, eighth-tier Taunton Town, are still goalless at Barrow.

    Northern Ireland 0-1 Croatia

The loudest cheer of the night from the Northern Ireland fans. Not for any scintillating attacking play. It is for Mario Mandzukic failing in his chase for a loose ball and crashing into an advertising board as he slides off the greasy Belfast turf.

  19. YELLOW CARDpublished at 20:32 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2016

    England 1-0 Spain

Another yellow card, this time for Theo Walcott as he slides in on Cesar Azpilicueta. It's all getting a bit niggly after a decent start to the game.

David Silva fires the free kick into the area, but England clear.

As one door closes, another opens for substitute Theo Walcott. Can he make an impact? Good chance for him.
