Has the former Middlesbrough boss done enough to be hired as the next England manager?

Hopefully he won't have too long to wait. That's it from us, until next time. Cheerio.

Alan Ferguson: Southgate is steady, safe and steady, not going to tear up any trees so if that's the best there is

Johnny Magrinho: Distinct difference between both teams. England tried hard to win but drew and Spain played for 5 minutes & scored 2.

A few more comments from Gareth Southgate, this time speaking to BBC Radio 5 live: "I have got to look at what the players have given and the way they have tried to play Spain toe to toe. We've played a top, top team. We used the ball really well at times and most pleasing of all we pressed high up the pitch. The biggest thing we have to take from the game is that as it wears on we have to keep the ball better to rest more. You could see we tired a bit towards the end."

On his England future: "I don't know other than I have a couple of days at home. The organisation will go through a process so from my point of view I can reflect on a brilliant experience. There are two ways to make a nation proud, win matches and excite people with performances and I felt we showed the latter tonight."

    Danny Mills
Ex-England defender on Radio 5 live

Danny Mills is VERY passionate about FA chairman Greg Clarke's comments about Gareth Southgate in the pre-match programme, saying they suggested he isn't going to get the job.

"I think it is an absolute joke. Those comments from the chairman in the programme to me say you are not getting the job. Those are the comments you pick up on. Gareth has no idea what will happen next. He has been fantastic with the press, very open and honest, but they clearly have not given him an indication what happens next. I cannot believe that.

"The programme comments sound like an obituary. Gareth has clearly had no indication that he has a really good chance of getting this job."

    England 2-2 Spain

As expected, Gareth Southgate was also asked about his future on ITV: "I've loved doing it. It's not my decision. We're proud of what we've done in the situation and tonight's performance was special.

"I've proved that I can handle big occasions. Until this run, under this spotlight, and in matches like Friday's against Scotland under intense pressure, you're never sure how it is going to be. I'm pleased and I think the remit we were given has been fulfilled.

On when a decision will be made: "I've no idea. We've got a European Under-21 Championship next summer and the draw is being made next month.

"I need to know where I'm going to park my car for the next few weeks!"

  10. 'We must keep the ball better'published at 22:26 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2016

    England 2-2 Spain

England interim coach Gareth Southgate, talking to ITV: "It was a fantastic performance and I can't fault the effort. I'm pleased with the way we pressed and used the ball going forward on the counter attack.

"We started to tire in the second half and that's where keeping the ball better will allow us to conserve energy better.

"We played one of the best teams in the world and I can't have asked for any more. Maybe not winning will be better for us in the long run, knowing what we have to do at this level."

Alexis Ox Chambo: No Southgate isn't the man. We need someone to take rank that players can look up to for what they've achieved

On the 'mannequin' celebration: "We had a little idea, thought it was the perfect time to get it started and everyone followed."

On interim manager Gareth Southgate: "He has been brilliant. He has not changed too much but you have seen in the performance that we came with a plan. It was not to be at the end of the game."

I can't really remember Pepe Reina making unbelievable saves. If England had the better chances, how did he only make one save?

The substitutes changed the game for Spain. They started asking questions of the back four of England. The discipline looked very good for 80 minutes, maybe England got disjointed because of a lot of substitutions or Spain just upped it a gear.

England captain Jordan Henderson talking to ITV: "I thought we worked really hard so to concede two goals so late on is really disappointing. We gave everything. We created chances and looked dangerous on the counter, they didn't create many chances.

"We matched Spain in terms of work rate and effort, there were a lot of good things. But to reflect on that so soon after conceding those goals is hard."
