A few sore heads in Watford today? The stands are looking a little sparse at the moment as the home goalkeepers go through their pre-match warm ups. Ex-Tottenham keeper Heurelho Gomes momentarily sends the Hornets keeper coach into a panic as he almost brings down the goal while doing some leg strengthening exercise against the post.

Tottenham can move up to third if they beat Watford today. That would put them 10 points behind leaders Chelsea, who ended 2016 in imperious form.

The Blues equalled the top-flight record of 13 consecutive wins in a single season by beating valiant Stoke in a thriller at Stamford Bridge.

An exceptionally entertaining second half included five goals as the Blues were twice made to retake the lead by a Potters side who gave them one of their toughest tests this season.

Max Smith in Macclesfield: Man City need to sack Pep Guardiola and get back Manuel Pellegrini or Roberto Mancini. Also need to sign a world class defender who doesn't get injured all the time i.e. Leonardo Bonucci, and recall Joe Hart. That would be classy business.

New year, but the passing of 18 or so hours hasn't softened some City supporters' attitudes towards poor old Pep...

John Pulling Jnr: He was easily the best player on the pitch yesterday. Perhaps Mourinho has a point.

Murilo Brito: Wouldn't agents always want to push for transfers? Especially a player like Martial who would have the agent receive £10m plus?

Thomas Albutt: Football is about hard work and perseverance, if they want an easy life I don't think any top level club will accept it. Footballers need to start listening to their managers and not the person who just wants his percentage!

I think it's pretty simple for Anthony Martial. Manchester United invested about £56m in him. He needs to play like that consistently. He has to ask his agent why he's linking him to Sevilla and say 'I'm at one of the biggest clubs in the world, I want to stay here'.

A player who could be on the move this month is Manchester United forward Anthony Martial.

The Frenchman's agent was reported to have said he is "studying" an option, external for his client to move to Sevilla.

Martial scored the equaliser in Saturday's 2-1 Premier League home win over Middlesbrough, and boss Jose Mourinho has urged Martial to listen to him, and not his agent.

"He is a player with amazing conditions to be a top player," said Mourinho. "He has to listen to me in training every day and in every feedback I give to try and improve him."

Tottenham bring up the halfway point of their season at Vicarage Road, just as they did last year, when they won 2-1 thanks to Son Heung-min's late goal.

They should certainly make the short trip with confidence after ending a run of eight away games without a win by overcoming Southampton at St Mary's.

Whilst Spurs points tally is a little better than at this stage last season, Watford are seven points worse off. Perhaps most tellingly of all is that the Odion Ighalo/Troy Deeney strike partnership had scored 19 Premier League goals then - and only five now.

Speaking of goals, have a look at Glenn Hoddle's chip for Spurs at Watford from September 1983 , external- it should keep you smiling long into 2017.

How a Sunday, and in particular New Year's Day, should be spent

On the way to work this morning I passed a load of hardy souls braving the cold and the rain to swim in Salford Quays.

That is not the way to spend New Year's Day.

Today is a day for lounging on the sofa and following the football. Here's what we've got coming up:

    • Watford v Tottenham (13:30 GMT)
    • Arsenal v Crystal Palace (16:00 GMT)
  13. New year, new hope?published at 11:59 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2017

    Hello and Happy New Year!

Had a good one last night? Someone who didn't have the best of New Year's Eves was Pep Guardiola. His was the football equivalent to a night watching an unsatisfying fireworks display in the rain before queuing for one hour for a taxi.

Defeat by Liverpool left Manchester City third and 10 points behind leaders Chelsea. Today they could slip to fifth if results go against them.

Guardiola's football hangover could be about to get a lot worse...
