Head it! Antonio Valencia delivers a fine cross which Paul Pogba lets go for some reason and the ball goes dead. Henrikh Mkhitaryan was behind him but that was a free header!

At the other end Abel Hernandez has a low shot saved by David de Gea.

When Manchester United get the ball wide they have not delivered enough quality into the box. One or two half chances, not a tremendous amount from the home team so far.

An interested spectator in the directors' box tonight is Steve Bruce.

He spent nine years at United as a player, captaining them to Premier League title success in 1993, 1994 and 1996.

More recently, he spent four seasons as manager of Hull, leading them to promotion to the Premier League twice before quitting this summer following a disagreement with the owners.

He is now in charge of Championship outfit Aston Villa.

Wonder if he has his eye on a player or two?

Ben Dales: Snodgrass putting himself in the shop window it seems with these free kicks!

Mwalimu Pedro: United being laid bare by Hull these past few minutes ... where is the fight and the bite? We have Liverpool next. Come on!

Promising from Hull. You can't stick 10 men behind the ball all game and they haven't, they are asking questions at the other end too. Marco Silva must be delighted.

Another Robert Snodgrass free-kick, but this time he hits the wall. Hull mounting a bit of pressure before the break though, now it's a corner.

I'm a little disappointed with Manchester United so far. Their tempo has been a little slower than we have been used to of late.

Jay: I feel sorry for Hull- such a depleted team- I still remember when they finished 6th in the League. I want them to do well.

Jason Moore: I'll be very happy if United win the EFL cup, but I do wish Mourinho would use it to blood at least a couple of youngsters

Hull hit the post! Ah, the offside flag goes up late but that's a scare for Manchester United. A Robert Snodgrass free-kick was helped on and Adama Diomande headed across goal, almost in slow motion, and it thudded against the base of the post.

Hull's ploy of sitting deep to prevent Marcus Rashford and co running in behind means that there's a lot of space in front of their backline and Marcus Rashford is the latest to find some. He batters a shot on goal which flies just over the top.

Pogba really set fire to that one. Hit it really hard, it dips a bit towards the end and Jakupovic did well to tip it over.

Not much on so Paul Pogba puts the laces through a shot from at least 35 yards, plenty of movement on the ball and Eldin Jakupovic has to shuffle across and push it over.

Carl Slocombe: I'm currently enjoying putting a 'C' in front of every players name ala Clucas. Crashford & Crooney are firm favourites so far.

    Cheers Ccarl...

The benefit of playing Tom Huddlestone at centre-half is that he can play slaying through balls from 70 yards. He almost sends Abel Hernandez clean through with a Hail Mary that Aaron Rodgers would be pleased with but Chris Smalling mops it up.

Paul Harris: The reason that Mourinho has a good league cup record is, unlike other top managers, he doesn't send out the youngsters.

The crowd are applauding the way Manchester United are patient about their build up. Mata more than anybody is showing he is capable of being the architect for Manchester United and you feel he has something in his locker.

A rare chance for Hull to load up the box as they win a free-kick but the usually dependable Robert Snodgrass has eyes too big for his belly and lamps the ball clean out of play, with plenty of men in the middle. Poor.

Manchester United were so dull, for so long, that it's refreshing to see some swashbuckling football. Ander Herrera and Juan Mata are involved in some join the dots stuff down the right before Henrikh Mkhitaryan screws another good chance wide.

    Mata - running the show.

Hull have named just six substitutes, so meagre are their playing resources.
