Mkhitaryan has hardly had a kick so far but that was a great opportunity for him. He should have at least hit the target.

Hull do finally get a replacement on for the stricken Markus Henriksen. It's a change in shape too as it's forward Abel Hernandez who comes on.

  3. CLOSE!published at 19 mins

    Manchester United 0-0 Hull City

Great chance! Should be 1-0. Juan Mata finds space inside the area and rolls a pass dead weight into the path of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, 10 yards out, he just needs to side-foot it in.

    He shoots wide.

Markus Henriksen limps off with his arm in a makeshift sling, to polite applause all round. Marco Silva needs another January signing. Like, now.

That looks the sort of injury to me that I think, I'm afraid, they will be looking for someone to fill his shoes for a few weeks ahead. It does not look good at all.

Not another injury for Hull City! This looks a bad one too. Markus Henriksen is barged over by Paul Pogba - like being knocked over by a hatchback - and he lands heavily on his side. He immediately signals that he is in trouble and it looks like a shoulder problem. Dislocation?

He's going to have to come off anyway.

We were talking about the nature of a two-legged tie and you can see that already - there is not a huge amount of urgency from either side. It is all rather low key.

Hull, boosted to get through that opening spell, like facing Ambrose and Walsh in their pomp, look more confident now. Having some time on the ball, forcing Paul Pogba into a rushed ball out of play.

Hull now seeing possession for the first real time, a lengthy spell of passing and then a poor cross from David Meyler, the emergency right-back. A shame.

Harry Maguire then steps out like some sort of Sheffield Sammer, a wonderful run from the back all the way to the edge of the United area and hits a low shot straight at David de Gea.

Nothing like a breaking transfer story just before kick-off.

As of Friday, there had been five clubs still trying to sign Morgan Schneiderlin, who was no longer being considered for selection by Jose Mourinho.

Everton was the player's first choice though and a few strong words by Ronald Koeman following his side's FA Cup exit to Leicester seem to have focussed minds at Goodison Park.

I am told if Schneiderlin meets easily achievable add-ons, United will recoup £24m of the £25m they paid for the France midfielder 18 months ago.

Score in a minute! They're gonna score in a minuuuuttteee!

All Manchester United as Matteo Darmian gets down the left and cuts a ball back, Marcus Rashford scuffs a shot across goal and Wayne Rooney is there for a tap-in - great interception by Andrew Robertson though.

Looking at that Hull back four, it will have hardly worked together, it doesn't know where each other are. It is going to get pulled around tonight and that is my worry - that they won't instinctively know how to react together.

Agreed Andy. I think a lot of us expected Juan Mata to be out of the exit door by now but he's been good. Hull have barely touched the ball in this opening.

Lovely sweeping move from Manchester United. We have seen that a lot from Juan Mata, he gets in the box at the right time and the keeper did well to get a hand to it.

Mata has put his head down under Mourinho, kept going and played his way into Mourinho's plans.

Almost an instant opener for the hosts as Juan Mata hits a shot on the bounce, about 15 yards out, and Eldin Jakupovic makes a cracking one-handed save! Saw that late.

Here they come, Wayne Rooney leads out Manchester United with a smile on his face. Backs-to-the-wall job coming up for Hull?

It's a long way from a full house at Old Trafford. Large sections are empty.
