Magnificent from Philippe Coutinho - there's disguise on the pass. Roberto Firmino made a great run on the overlap but it was too close to David de Gea and he made the save.

  3. GREAT SAVE!published at 61 mins

    Man Utd 0-1 Liverpool

An instant impact from Philippe Coutinho, as he takes a touch and carresses it into the path of Roberto Firmino.

The Brazilian composes himself and curls a low effort which David de Gea pushes away.

Richy: Mourinho starts with 3 defensive midfielders and only changes when they're behind. Should attack from the start as a home team.

saidmadrid: Liverpool looking more dangerous at the break. United still trying to dominate a game they are losing in midfield

David Payn: I know a really good opticians for anyone who thinks Pogba's handball wasn't a penalty. They remove the rose-tinting as well

Manchester United on the front foot in the second half, with Liverpool scrambling to reach every last ditch challenge.

It has brought the home supporters to life.

Can United make the pressure count?

Wayne Rooney into the box on the right edge, but his pull-back is straight into the hands of Simon Mignolet.

The Belgian takes some stick, but his handling has been very assured today.

More often than not, the matches between the two fail to produce any excitement.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan looked for Anthony Martial, who makes the run to the near post - he's tried to backheel it into the net. He should surely score and has to go with it with his right foot.

    Almost the leveller.

Trent Alexander-Arnold gives the ball away to Anthony Martial, and the Frenchman plays Henrikh Mkhitaryan into the box.

Unselfishly, the Armenian lays it across and Martial tries a flicked finish, but gets nothing on the ball.

    United have had their chances.

  14. Stage set for Rooneypublished at 17:09 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January 2017

Maybe Jose Mourinho thinks the stage is set for Wayne Rooney as he chases that historic 250th goal that would make him Manchester United's all-time record goalscorer - with the possibility of the boyhood Evertonian doing it against Liverpool.

It is certainly an intriguing change from the United manager given how important Michael Carrick has been as the anchor of their recent run of victories.

Getting a little stop-start now as Divock Origi pulls back Antonio Valencia, but the visitors clear Henrikh Mkhitaryan's free-kick into the box.

The ball keeps coming back for the Liverpool defence though.

And now to the other end as United earn a corner...

...but Wayne Rooney cannot get it past the first man Adam Lallana.

Very poor from the Manchester United skipper.

Liverpool break in a flash and the ball finds Divock Origi on the angle of the penalty area.

He curls one towards the top corner, which comes off the head of Phil Jones and away for a corner.

It wasn't that far away from going in.

The goalscorer is OK to continue though.
