Sometimes you think Atletico are on the ropes but they almost mirror their manager - they are so dogged and determined, they will not give up.

Simeone will be telling them at half time, they are not out of it yet - there are two legs to this semi-final.

Every stat you can read paints the same picture - it's a battering from Real Madrid in this first half. But get Diego Simeone back in the changing room at 0-1 and he'll be reasonably satisfied I reckon.

With regard to your comment on 22 min Tom, a bit of tactical analysis here and there is not boring - it shows a sharp, intellectual eye for the game, gives us an idea of what's happening on the pitch, and is a nice change of pace from just reporting pure highlights. Don't shy away from it!

Isco is everywhere for Real Madrid. Ostensibly he is playing in a front three but he's actually much deeper than Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo. A genuine free role.

Koke does then play a peach of a pass, inside out to the right wing but Yannick Carrasco's cross is then blocked. The tempo has come down a notch.

Atletico Madrid can't get hold of the ball at the moment.

Koke has had a really poor start to the game - couple of poor passes.

Isco has been the main man for me so far.

It's 68% of possession for Real Madrid, and an early lead. But Atletico won't be too concerned, they are used to this gameplan. Nick an away goal and they are back in business.

    Real Madrid 1-0 Atletico Madrid

Yannick Carrasco with another good run through the middle, tripped, free-kick in a good area.

Antoine Griezmann clips it to the back post, Diego Godin is free but on the stretch, and fires it over.

That's their first shot of the night. And a very credible chance.

That was nearly the goal of the tournament from Benzema with his weaker left foot, it was acrobatic and it nearly went into that top corner. Jan Oblak was well beaten.

Better from Atletico as Yannick Carrasco carries the ball, and Antoine Griezmann flicks it out wide with a superb touch, but the final ball is poor.

Real come again down their left, Cristiano Ronaldo sends in a brilliant cross and Karim Benzema goes for the overhead kick - over!

    Emre Can would have scored!

Real have started better and dominated the first 25 minutes but this has been sensational, technical, committed football so far from both teams.

  11. YELLOW CARDpublished at 26 mins

    Real Madrid 1-0 Atletico Madrid

Martin Atkinson is into the game, booking Koke for a cynical trip on Luka Modric as Real looked to counter. For the first time in a while Atletico had men on the overlap there but they made a hash of it. Not at their best so far - it's a 10-0 shot count in fact.

We've not seen much of Antoine Griezmann in this game so far - a few little bursts but he's not had much of the ball or got the service he will want.

    Real Madrid 1-0 Atletico Madrid

Antoine Griezmann has been peripheral but Atleti nearly send him in on the break - great cover from Dani Carvajal again though. Real attack, Jan Oblak nervously punches when he could have caught, and Luka Modric drills wide from 22 yards.

I don't want to go down the route of a pub bore tactical chat, but Atletico are basically playing 4-4-2. And maybe paying the price at the moment.

Real are totally outnumbering Atletico in the midfield - they have total control of the game.

Dani Carvajal is on a run again, the Real right-back is getting far too much joy. He will punish Atletico, and he nearly does, finding Karim Benzema, who can't sort his feet well enough to get a sweet shot off.

In an era when most players don't play in one, Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 11 goals in Champions League semi-finals.
