Football writer Pete Jenson on BBC Radio 5 live: "Phil Neville is right when he says Atletico have all been about defending over the last few years, but they know they need to score tonight. They can't go into the second leg at the Vicente Calderon needing to chase the game against Real Madrid. Tonight is all about getting goals - and two is better than one.

"I'm not sure Diego Simeone could take another final disappointment. It's there in the back of his mind, 'how far can I take this club?' Inter are very keen on him when he decides to do something different."

  2. 'Atletico never give up'published at 19:14 British Summer Time 2 May 2017

Real Madrid v Atletico Madrid (19:45 BST)

Zinedine Zidane, who succeeded Rafael Benitez in January 2016, is aiming for a La Liga and Champions League double in his first full season in charge at the Bernabeu.

The last time Real, level on points with league leaders Barcelona with one game in hand, were crowned champions of Spain and Europe in the same season was 1957-58.

Yet Zidane said his side must pass two huge tests if they are to book their place in the Champions League final in Cardiff on 3 June.

"Atletico always gives us a hard game," said the former France midfielder.

"The strength they have is that they never give up, no matter what happens. They fight, battle, they know their strengths and use them as best they can.

"In the past four or five years they have been a very good side that have improved every year."

    It's an unbelievable tie - this semi-final.

Atletico are a fantastic team who have plenty of strikers who can really hurt this Real Madrid team tonight.

I've been round Madrid today and these Real fans are nervous. They know Atletico have strikers who can cause problems. Real are also defensively weak.

    How are your nerves?

Around Madrid, people see Diego Simeone's side and everyone likes this team but Real Madrid are not really that popular outside Madrid.

Atletico are masters at defence - they have such a dogged determination, they are so well coached and well organised. In Diego Godin they have one of the best out and out defenders in the world.

Just over half an hour until kick-off then. Atletico are the kings of the shutout, with six clean sheets in this season's Champions League to Real's zero.

You can imagine them keeping Real out at home in the second leg. So if they score tonight they would be in business.

Former Atletico Madrid player Veljko Paunovic on BBC World Service: "In his last years of playing Diego Simeone told me he wanted to start his coaching career. He is executing his plan and I know that Atletico was always part of his plan, part of his project to be a successful coach.

"I think one day we'll see him as the coach of Argentina."

We want to know about those painful defeats against the team that always seems to get the better of you.

I'm afraid it's Liverpool ever since Clive Thomas disallowed our winner in 1977. It's been raining ever since for us Evertonians. The pain runs deep with more successful city rivals. Us Evertonians will be with Atletico tonight.

Atletico Madrid defender Lucas Hernandez has signed a new contract until 2022.

The 21-year-old Frenchman is expected to start at full-back tonight.

Hernandez has played 23 La Liga games for Atletico, including 12 this season.

"It is great news for all Atletico fans, he is a player with enormous potential with a spectacular future to come," said Atletico's sporting director Jose Luis Caminero.

Hernandez's 19-year-old brother, Theo, is on loan at Copa del Rey finalists Alaves from Atletico, while their father, Jean-Francois Hernandez, played for Atletico between 2000 and 2001.

There is some debate over who is going to play right-back for Atletico tonight. With both first-choice options out, it will be a centre-half who is asked to do a job.

It could be former Manchester City man Stefan Savic. It could be Lucas Hernandez. Whoever it is has only got to worry about Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcelo...

There will be 6,000 Atletico fans in the stadium, which apparently is a much larger allocation than they would normally get for a league derby.

One of the "Ronaldos" at lunch told me that there is a big social media campaign among Real Madrid fans to keep up the intimidating atmosphere for the full 90 mins.

He said: "We always have a huge first 10 minutes of noise, but then it sometimes goes quieter. Not tonight."

Real Madrid make two changes from the side who beat Valencia 2-1 on Saturday. Attacking midfielder Isco replaces James Rodriguez and Raphael Varane, who has spent about half the season out injured, takes Nacho's place at centre-back.

Gareth Bale misses out with a calf injury, as we already knew.

Real Madrid: Navas, Carvajal, Ramos, Varane, Marcelo, Casemiro, Kroos, Modric, Isco, Ronaldo, Benzema. Subs: Casilla, Nacho, Kovacic, Rodriguez, Vazquez, Asensio, Morata

Atletico also make two switches from their 5-0 win at Las Palmas on Saturday. Centre-back Diego Godin comes in for Jose Gimenez and Yannick Carrasco replaces Nico Gaitain on the wing.

Kevin Gameiro keeps his place up front next to Antoine Griezmann after scoring twice at the weekend.

Atletico Madrid: Oblak, Savic, Lucas, Godin, Luis, Gabi, Saul, Koke, Carrasco, Griezmann, Gameiro. Subs: Moya, Tiago, Torres, Correa, Thomas, Gaitan, Rodriguez.
