England look a threat now, Harry Kane almost gets in behind and wins a corner, which France defend well.

Michael Ball: No need at all to brandish the red there, even with VAR. Penalty all day long though.

Tom McCarron: Video ref probably got that wrong which knowing FIFA means that'll be the end of that experiment

Tim Little: Harsh red card IMO. I can see we'll have as many arguments about video judgements as we do without!

France fans were unhappy before the result of that video review - and even unhappier when the outcome was a red card for Raphael Varane and an England equaliser.

England much brighter at the start of this second half.

With the extra man, you would expect England to dominate this game now but be wary of France on the counter-attack.

That's the third decision which has gone against France after going to the video ref - they had a goal disallowed against Spain and then had a Spain goal awarded. Not fans of this technology I'm sure!

From a spectator's point of view I thought the system worked well. It didn't feel like a lengthy wait and as the ref had already given the penalty there was no play stopped.

    France 2-2 England

Dele Alli has a header comfortably saved by Hugo Lloris before Raheem Sterling almost burrows his way through on goal.

Didier Deschamps makes a change to steady the ship, Laurent Koscielny replaces Olivier Giroud.

A foul as the last man is not automatically a red card any more, but deliberate fouls still incur a red card.

Those include holding, pulling or pushing, not playing the ball, serious foul play, violent conduct or deliberate handball in order to deny a goalscoring opportunity.

I think Raphael Varane was adjudged to have pulled or pushed Dele Alli so went off. He was unfortunate I think you have to say.

    Oh France are not happy.

Looking at it, I don't think he meant to take him down - he just clipped the heels but the ref has got no option. That's the rules.

England are back in the game. Can they maintain it?

What a start to the second half!

Harry Kane has his second of the night, drilling a penalty low and hard right down the middle. England level and a man up.

    France 2-1 England

Dele Alli was suddenly in behind, clean through, and he hits the deck. Was there any contact? The ref gave the penalty but then referred it upstairs.

And now Raphael Varane has been sent off! Wow!

After that half from Ousmane Dembele I wouldn't back Moussa Sissoko to be in the starting line-up again any time soon. The Dortmund man is electric.

  19. England's defence exposedpublished at 20:58 British Summer Time 13 June 2017

    France 2-1 England

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Stade de France

Not much luck for Burnley keeper Tom Heaton there - two saves fell directly into the path of Samuel Umtii and Djibril Sidibe.

England have looked very uncertain and John Stones was embarrassed by Ousmane Dembele in the build-up to France's second goal.

And there is the prospect of the likes of Antoine Griezmann and Alexandre Lacazette to come.

Jack Butland is going to come on for the second half, we knew that already. In terms of central midfielders, Gareth Southgate doesn't have many options.

Jake Livermore or. In fact that's it.
