Is this man in your starting XI for next summer?

A year on from now and we'll be one day away from the World Cup in Russia. Both England and France will hope to be there, though France have got a bit of work to do to avoid a play-off spot.

England look home and dry though. Right?

What I want you to do is name your England XI for their opening World Cup match next summer.

Be it in Sterling in Saransk, Kane in Kaliningrad or Rashford in Rostov-on-Don, who do you want to play, and in what system?

There's plenty up for grabs. Who will be the goalkeeper? Four or three at the back? Alli and Lallana in same XI? Who can play in centre mid?

We should have team news soon from the Stade de France. We do know that Harry Kane will be captain and Tom Heaton makes his first start in goal.

  3. Can't stop Kante?published at 18:36 British Summer Time 13 June 2017

    France v England (20:00 BST)

He may not have featured against Sweden on Friday night but we expect Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante to play tonight. And absolutely run the show, no doubt.

Didier Deschamps said: "N'Golo had a very great season, I had the opportunity to discuss with his coach whom I know well (Antonio Conte in Chelsea).

"He made a big season, proved very good in his record, but ended up with a small injury. I did not use him in the game in Sweden but he's likely to be used."

Why are England playing a friendly tonight?

Because they can, and because it'll be a money spinner. Those are the only real reasons I can tell. Haven't we had enough football?

There is no competitive game until September and with Kieran Trippier and Ben Gibson the only uncapped players in the squad it's not really an 'experimental' side.

  5. We go againpublished at 18:27 British Summer Time 13 June 2017

    France v England (20:00 BST)

No, the football season is not quite over yet!

England drew 2-2 with Scotland at the weekend but they have still found time and room to squeeze in a friendly in Paris tonight.

What will Gareth Southgate learn from tonight's run-out? Well he is building a team to (hopefully) compete at next summer's World Cup finals in Russia and tonight is auditioning for a few roles.

A new goalkeeper? And maybe a new ball-playing central midfield player too.

All set for one more game? (before the European Under-21s, the Confederations Cup, the women's Euros, the Champions League qualifiers...)
