"What he possesses in height in strength I also possess, we had to ride a lot of storms but we stood up to the test very well.

Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic on being stamped on by Tyrone Mings:

"It is not my intention to hurt someone. I didn't know about the stamping on the head, if it was him it was him."

Bournemouth

Bournemouth keeper Artur Boruc after keeping Manchester United out with a string of fine saves, including from Zlatan Ibrahimovic's penalty: "It is a unbelievable result. It is very big and hopefully we can build on this, we need to collect points and we started today.

"The penalty? I just happened to pick the right direction!"

Cherries defender Tyrone Mings:  "We knew the challenge before we came here and to get a man sent off and play for over 45 minutes with 10 men made it even harder. 

"We showed fighting spirit and the character we need until now and end of the season." 

Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, speaking to BBC Sport: "Listen, what happens on the field stays on the field. I'm not someone who attacks someone off the field. You have the TV, you can see the images. I jump up and jump high and he [Mings] jumps into my elbow."

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, speaking to Sky Sports:  "It's two points dropped. We have to keep going, fighting and believing and try to put it right.

"We created a lot of chances, the keeper made good saves and there were times in the game when they'd have the ball and become a threat on the counter attack.

"I don't think the referee has seen Tyrone Mings try and stamp on Zlatan's head. I was right there. That's wrong in football. Everyone likes tackles in the game but to try and stamp on a player's head - there's no room for it.

Bournemouth defender Tyrone Mings on whether he intentionally stamped on Zlatan Ibrahimovic's head: "No, not at all. I would never do that. It is not in my game. Hard and fair is how I like to tackle but off the ball things like that is not my game."

On Ibrahimovic then appearing to elbow him moments later: "He is who is he is - he is a physical player. I knew what sort of battle I'd have playing against him. That's what we had.

"There might have been an elbow when the ball came in after, I didn't see it but I felt it.

"I had feeling he might be coming for me for the whole game! He's a physical guy and it was a good battle all day."

More from Jose Mourinho, this time on referee Kevin Friend's performance: "The two big decisions of the game, the referee was very good. It was a penalty against us and our penalty was spot on. The other things...who knows. I think the officials had a good performance."

On playing 10 men:  "Sometimes it is easier, sometimes it is more difficult. If we score a second goal at start of the second half then it is different and becomes easier. 

"They did what teams normally do when teams have 10 men. I'm not blaming them for that."

Bournemouth assistant boss Jason Tindall has been speaking to MOTD.

On his absence from the Bournemouth bench in the second half:  "I let my frustration get the better of me. I wasn't happy with the yellow cards to Andrew Surman and I said too much for what I should have done.

"I didn't see the elbow [from Zlatan Ibrahimovic on Tyrone Mings], people are telling me it was and obviously that has played a part in Surman getting sent off.

"I thought the effort and the achievement from the team was phenomenal. We have taken a lot of criticism but our effort here has been incredible."

Does the result feel like a win?  "I think so, yes. When you take all the circumstances into consideration it does feel like a win."

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, speaking to BBC Sport: "What happened was that we played phenomenal in the first half and should have been winning 3-0 or 4-0 - then it ended up 1-1. Who can I blame? Ourselves. Nobody else. We missed big chances.

"In the second half we played different team with a man less. I understand their need for one point in the survival battle and they just defended to make it difficult for us. I understand that. And on top of that the goalkeeper was phenomenal.

"We felt pressure of the clock running down and lost the quality of our attacking football. We didn't lose intensity or desire but the reality is we didn't score goals."

Jose Mourinho says referee Kevin Friend had a "good" performance. Not sure if he's winding us up.

He also says United cannot "blame anyone other than ourselves" for not winning.

Expect Jose Mourinho to make a number of changes for Manchester United's next game - a 4,000-mile round trip to Russia to face FC Rostov in the Europa League last-16 first leg on Thursday (18:00 GMT).

There might as well have been one-way traffic signs erected on the halfway line at Old Trafford.

All the attacks were going towards the Bournemouth goal as Manchester United dominated possession.

And you can see this by our average positions graphic which shows how high up the home side (left) played compared to their 10-man opponents. 

Each Cherries player - apart from striker Benik Afobe - spent most of the match in their own half.

This result will hurt Manchester United. They were looking to move into the top four but remain sixth and don't play again in the Premier League for another two weeks because of their FA Cup commitments.

Manchester United peppered the away goal with 20 efforts, SIX of which were saved by Cherries hero Artur Boruc (green arrows) and five which missed the target (red arrows).

Plus the gutsy away players blocked eight other efforts (yellow circles).
