Has Emre Can got away with one there?

He's turned by Kevin de Bruyne in midfield and yanks the City midfielder back, but Michael Oliver decides to keep his cards dry.

De Bruyne is running things early on at the Etihad, he then combines with David Silva before fizzing a cross in that is pushed behind by Simon Mignolet.

This one has started at a frantic pace.

Yaya Toure this time looks to break the Liverpool line with a clever ball inside James Milner, but Raheem Sterling strays offside.

You fancy it only takes City to get one of those right...

Interesting that both teams spent money on new keepers during the summer only to both reinstall the keepers they deemed not good enough in the first place. Caballero couldn't even get a start last season ahead of Hart.

What a fantastic start to the game, both teams attacking.

    Manchester City 0-0 Liverpool

City are looking to break fast when they do get the ball.

Kevin de Bruyne picks it up and looks for the pace of Leroy Sane down the left, but the German winger is too quick for that one and finds himself offside.

It should be an interesting battle between him and Nathaniel Clyne.

A bespectacled Jurgen Klopp looks drenched.

Hood up, face peeping through a gap in his rain jacket, like a boy scout caught in a storm.

On the pitch, Sadio Mane beats Nicolas Otamendi and wins a free-kick on the right, but Philippe Coutinho over hits his delivery and it skids away for a City throw.

It's looking slippy out there, and Raheem Sterling does his best to slide through a gap in the Liverpool defence moments after kick-off.

City's tricky winger skips inside off the right before finding Leroy Sane, but Liverpool recover to clear.

    Sunday afternoon stroll? No chance.

These two sides have averaged the most distance run in the Premier League this season.

Liverpool have racked up a Forrest Gump-like 117.3km per game, while Manchester City are just short of their north west rivals at 114.8km per game.

City's attacking five against Liverpool's front three...

Probably be a goalless draw now.

And if there's one manager who knows how to get the better of Pep Guardiola, it's Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

The German has won five times against his Spanish counterpart in all competitions - that's more victories against Guardiola than any other manager.

Between them, Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp may have history due to the previous rivalry in German football.

However, the battles between the managers and Manchester City and Liverpool are less frequent.

This will be the first time Guardiola has entertained Liverpool as a home manager. Klopp though does have history at City.

In 2012 he brought Borussia Dortmund to the Etihad Stadium for a Champions League group game.

Mario Balotelli's injury-time penalty cancelled out Marco Reus' second-half opener.

Tottenham goal scorer Christian Eriksen speaking to Sky Sports: "Everyone felt responsibility without Harry [Kane]. We had 11 players and we were good enough to substitute.

"It was important someone else scored and we did. We had exactly the same system but with Son up front instead of Harry. He is a different player but I think we did really well in the first half."

Tottenham's Jan Vertonghen: "We had to work very hard. Southampton are a great team with great players. We were lucky to be 2-0 up at half time and then had to get the third one but didn’t.

"Chelsea are favourites for the title but we won't give up until they lift the trophy. We are doing well and have to aim for the highest place possible and keep winning our games."

Pep Guardiola is well used to managing his sides through a sequence of big games. However, it is unlikely that with either Barcelona or Bayern Munich he approached such a run with each fixture so laced with the danger of defeat.

After Liverpool at the Etihad, Guardiola travels to Arsenal and Chelsea as a prelude to pitting his wits against Arsene Wenger again in the FA Cup semi-final.

City might win the lot - but,  after Monaco , Guardiola surely cannot completely silence the nagging voice which says that they could also lose the lot.

Jurgen Klopp will have studied Monaco's approach to beating City and concluded that it was not so very far removed from his own preferred modus operandi - an approach which earned Liverpool  a thumping win at City  last season.

Manchester United's win at Middlesbrough has turned up the pressure a notch on Manchester City and Liverpool as they meet here at Etihad Stadium.

Jose Mourinho's side are now just three points behind Liverpool with a game in hand and four adrift of City, who have also played 27 games.

Pep Guardiola will also be looking for a response from his side after the disappointing Champions League exit against Monaco while Liverpool opposite number Jurgen Klopp will hope to repeat last season's triumph here, an impressive 4-1 win.
