I think the thinking there is that Gary Cahill, who captains England tonight, is suspended for Sunday's game so John Stones will play there.

Worst England XI in 19 years? I'm not sure about that. But it is lacking in star quality, I'd agree.

Who has Gareth Southgate left out who you think should be in though? He's not blessed with many fit and available options I'd suggest.

Naveed Afzal: Been watching football since 98 World Cup and this is the worst starting XI I've ever seen us put out. WOW

RegularJon: wow what a massively underwhelming England XI. If I hadn't given up on the national side a long time ago, I'd be giving up now

Kyle: The performance is more important than the result we beat Argentina 3-2 in a friendly just before a world cup too

  4. 'We've got work to do'published at 19:09 Greenwich Mean Time 22 March 2017

    Germany v England (19:45 GMT)

If you've spent any time in Germany you'll probably agree that it is a pretty awesome place.

And their national set-up is good too. They are world champions and tend to reach at least the last four of any tournament they enter.

Here's some more admiration, from Gareth Southgate this time: "We've probably got some work to do in terms of the way Germany have a connection between the DFB (the German football association) and the Bundesliga that is immensely strong. There is an opportunity for the young German players to play in that league - there is a real buy-in on that, partly because of the ownership model of the clubs.

"To highlight the difference, they postponed the start of the Bundesliga because they got a team in the Olympics. We can't even get a team in the Olympics. That is the collaboration they have."

I'm almost certainly going to bore you tonight with the news that I went out to Dortmund just a few weeks ago to watch the Benfica game. It was superb.

The Westfalenstadion is as impressive an arena as you imagine - and tonight's pre-match mural is a dedication to the retiring Lukas Podolski.

    A special night.

It is 30 years since Germany, or England, beat the other side at home.

Back in 1987 Gary Lineker poked home for England but (then West) Germany won 3-1. Since then the sides have met 12 times, with England winning on four occasions.

Those wins came in Charleroi (Euro 2000), Munich (5-1 in 2001) and twice in friendlies in Berlin (2008 and 2016).

Germany have picked up wins in Italy (World Cup 1990), Wembley (1991, Euro 96, 2000, 2007 and 2013), South Africa (World Cup 2010) and the US (Pontiac Silverdrome 1993).

It was this time last year that Roy Hodgson was left beaming from ear to ear as England came from 2-0 down to beat Germany 3-2 in Berlin.

A warning, if ever there was one, that results in friendlies ultimately don't count for much.

"It is a friendly game and we have got an awful long way to go before we can claim to be anything like Germany with all they have achieved," Roy quite rightly said.

Mind you, the goals from Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy were top class.

West Brom midfielder Jake Livermore wants to make proud the people who helped him through difficult times after earning an England recall.

The 27-year-old won his only cap, until now, in August 2012 against Italy but has had some dark days since then.

After the death of his newborn son Jake Junior, he  tested positive for cocaine in May 2015  but  avoided a two-year ban  and has gone on to rebuild his career.

"I wouldn't have thought it would come, it was in my distant dreams," he said.

"I never thought I'd have the opportunity to represent my country again. The longer it goes, the harder it seems to get.

"Having this opportunity to repay them in any way, shape or form is like a dream for me."

This page is very much concentrating on events in Dortmund this evening, but there are four friendlies taking place in total.

Scotland face Canada at Easter Road - you will be able to follow that game in full here.

Burnley midfielder Scott Arfield is in action tonight - playing for Canada.

    West Lothian-born Arfield, 28, represented Scotland at under-19, under-21 and B level.

However, he was not selected for the senior squad and won the first of his six Canada caps last year.

"I'm happy that I've taken this opportunity," said Arfield.

"You have a dream that you want to play for Scotland. As you get older, your career takes you in different places.

"When the call never came, my mind was made up maybe three years ago."

Who was the last Baggie to play for England?published at 18:46 Greenwich Mean Time 22 March 2017

    Germany v England (19:45 GMT)

So Jake Livermore starts tonight but we were thinking: Who was the last West Brom player to play for England?

    Ben Foster, of course.

OK then, so who was the last outfield player to play for England?

    Saido Berahino? No caps.

Kieran Richardson? No caps while technically an Albion player.

    Kevin Campbell? No caps.

    James Morrison? Scottish.

    Steve HuntImage source, PA

It was actually winger Steve Hunt. He won two caps in 1984, before everyone in the current squad was born.

    Apart from Jermain Defoe.

We had more sad news earlier on this morning, as former Liverpool captain and coach Ronnie Moran died at the age of 83.

Moran made 379 appearances for Liverpool between 1952 and 1966 and was the club's longest-serving employee when he retired in 1998.

He joined the coaching staff in 1966 and twice filled in as caretaker manager - after Kenny Dalglish's resignation in 1991 and following Graeme Souness' heart surgery in 1992.

His son confirmed he had passed away on Wednesday after a short illness.

Moran worked under nine different managers during his time in the dugout.

He famously led Liverpool out at Wembley in the 1992 FA Cup final while caretaker manager while Souness was recovering from surgery.
