Chelsea manager Antonio Conte speaking to Match of the Day: "Manchester United deserved to win because they showed more desire, more motivation, more ambition to win this game.

"This league is not closed. Tottenham are on great form and playing with great enthusiasm, but we are playing a great season and we must try to reach this target.

"We started as underdogs and it won't be easy."

Four of Chelsea's remaining six fixtures are at Stamford Bridge, where they have won 13 and lost two of their 15 matches this season.

So the title race is finally alive and kicking! We think.

Although Chelsea are still firmly in control. Five wins from their six remaining games will see them home.

On a possible handball by Ander Herrera in the build up to United's second goal: "Last game against Bournemouth we conceded a goal in a same situation, against Palace a clear handball, against Stoke a penalty with great doubt. This is not important.

"It is important to find the right solution, but the decision of the referee wasn't good for us. We were unlucky."

Chelsea actually shaded possession over the 90 minutes, after hogging the ball in the final 20 minutes. By then it was too late.

A more damning statistic is they did not manage a single shot on target, while United scored twice from their three attempts at goal.

"In this case, the fault is the coach. It is mine. In this case I wasn't able to do the right motivation.

"To play this type of game from now and until the end we must have great enthusiasm, great motivation to try to reach the target. 

"This for us is a fantastic target.

"I have concern because we have to work together and find quickly the right ambition to win this title - if someone thinks it's normal for Chelsea to win the title, we started as underdogs after 10th place last season.

"Tottenham is in good form and playing with enthusiasm, we must find the same."

The mood of Antonio Conte, understandably, is darker than the gloomy Salford skies.

The Chelsea manager says the defeat was "the coach's fault". Admirable.

Manchester United

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho speaking to Match of the Day: "Chelsea are the best counter attacking team in the country and we controlled them very well. I'm really happy with the boys. I’m happy - not because it’s Chelsea, it’s because we need these three points.

"I don’t feel extra joy at beating Chelsea - we beat the leader. It doesn’t matter if the leader is Chelsea or another - we beat them convincingly. Nobody can doubt our credit to win the game."

Chelsea goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, speaking to BBC Sport: "I think the defeat is down to a combination of things. United were more aggressive, they won second balls and probably wanted it more. 

"They got a great start and then went on from there. We need to be better going forward.

"We have a lot of matchwinners, it was not just a case of Eden Hazard being man marked and taken out the game. We weren't at it today but we have a lot of character and can bounce back.

"We have a four-point advantage and at the start of the season we would have taken it at this stage. 

"If we win our games it doesn't matter what Spurs do."

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho on Sky Sports: "Maybe we didn't 'rest' players ahead of Thursday, we just chose the team we thought was the best team. 

"We went to Stamford Bridge in the cup with same tactics, the game was totally controlled with 11 players, only the decision that made us play with 10 men for the second half and 10 minutes in the first half, gave Chelsea a chance to be dominant.

"We knew that playing this way would be very difficult for them.

"Marcus Rashford played fantastically well. He had a very good game at Stamford Bridge in the cup, exactly the same chance to score, because he is faster than their defenders.

"Today he scored and it gave the team more confidence, more stability."

It was not just those inside Old Trafford who handed Marcus Rashford a standing ovation...

Manchester United goalscorer Marcus Rashford on Sky Sports: "Today took a lot of discipline to carry out the game plan and actions. 

"It's not so much stepping up to the plate in Ibrahimovic's absence, everyone is together and we grafted to put the work in to get the result.

"It was a clever pass from Herrera, we made eye contact and he put the ball exactly where I want it. It's something we need in this team."
