Aidy Boothroyd has challenged his players to go into their remaining games "full pelt" and is hoping that the presence of senior England coach Gareth Southgate will help to inspire his team.

Southgate, assistant Steve Holland and Football Association technical director Dan Ashworth flew in for the game against Sweden and watched training on Sunday.

"It's really helpful having them here," said Boothroyd. "It shows players there is a pathway for them.

"And if the senior manager can take time out of his busy schedule to come to watch us then it gives the players a boost. Gareth's been very positive.

"It's great, if I have any questions about players Gareth can be my sounding board because he knows them all so well and was with them in Toulon."

Southgate was in charge of the under-21 team from August 2013 until he took over the senior side last September.

Can England progress? What changes should Aidy Boothroyd be thinking about? Should he be allowed to call up any players who qualify? Rashford, Sterling, Dier, Alli etc...

If you missed England's opener on Friday it's fair to say that you didn't miss a great deal.

It was a very dull game against Sweden, with new £30m man Jordan Pickford taking the headlines with a penalty save.

Attacking-wise, England created precisely nothing, only looking dangerous from long throws. You felt sorry for lone striker Tammy Abraham who was given scraps.

Greetings from Kielce. The heat is on and so is the pressure as England players face must win scenario....

Quite simply, England have to win this match to maintain any hope of progressing.

In essence, despite this being the second group game, it's knockout football because defeat will mean England are going home.

The mood around the camp remains relaxed and positive, they know what's required both in terms of result and performance. Boothroyd has made it clear there is room for improvement following Friday's display.

Slovakia are an attack-minded side and after coming from behind to defeat Poland on Friday, they know another victory will take them to the brink of a spot in the semi finals.

Not the two or three changes Aidy Boothroyd was contemplating, instead one as John Swift replaces Jacob Murphy.

It means a tactical switch from 4-2-3-1 to a 4-4-2 which should see Nathan Redmond involved more and provide greater support for Tammy Abraham.

A 0-0 draw in their opener basically means that England are playing knockout football from here on in.

Aidy Boothroyd: "It is an unforgiving set up.

"You've got to hit the ground running. We have to win so there's no point trying to shy away from it."

  8. 'No second chance'published at 15:52 British Summer Time 19 June 2017

    Slovakia U21 v England U21 (17:00 BST)

'No second chances' - that was the message from England U21 boss Aidy Boothroyd before this afternoon's game.

Friday's 0-0 bore draw with Sweden means that realistically anything other than a win in Kielce would signal the end of England's campaign.
