    England U21 3-0 Poland U21

England Under-21 manager Aidy Boothroyd: "It's a great moment. After the first game which was a draw it was doom and gloom but we have a good group here and got the two wins that we needed. It was a high-pressure game, if we hadn't won then we would be out.

"We carried out the game plan to a t. We controlled the game and played really well. There were a few nervy moments.

"Demarai Gray was terrific. He worked his socks off. It is a squad game and one of the hardest things is keeping the lads who aren't playing motivated. But it is a good group, I'm really pleased.

"I'm hoping it won't be a Pyrrhic victory. Redmond and Chalobah were both injured. They have both been massive players for us. Nathaniel has a groin problem and we didn't want to make it worse. They will both be assessed in the morning."

Rather than making a senior England cap, surely a better question is how many will get a chance, an extended chance not one League Cup game, in a top 10 Premier League side?

I think they will be delighted to get to the semis but hopefully they can make one more step - the ability is there and hopefully they can get to another final.

  6. 'The job's not over'published at 21:49 British Summer Time 22 June 2017

    England U21 3-0 Poland U21

England Under-21 forward Demarai Gray: "It's good to progress but the job's not over, we are focussed on the semi-finals.

"We needed to settle the nerves and the early goal did that, and then we killed it in the second half. I want to score goals and create goals, especially at a big tournament.

"I want to play every game and my opportunity came today. Hopefully I did enough to keep my place in the team but we are a good group of lads and everyone is ready.

"Can we go further? Why not? We will cause any team problems."

We know there is a challenge for the lads to get a chance in their club sides. They have to show that they are good enough.

Playing in the first team is the only way they are going to really develop. But they have shown that they are really intelligent footballers - they really understand the tactical side of the game and we are working on it all the time.

We are trying to get an identity to the way we want England to play - you have to give credit to people in the higher positions at St George's Park - they have a plan and we are trying to grow things.

There are a lot of good things going on. But we have to keep going and keep our identity.

We want the players to recognise how to play out from the back, that there are different ways to do that. The space tonight was in the full-back areas because Poland pressed high. Jordan Pickford has the technical ability to do that and that is how the first goal came tonight.

Andy Holt: why do people expect *all* u20, u21 players etc to make the full national team? just by sheer weight of numbers it cannot work

Charles Fairweather: Oh no, in living memory every time England have played on my birthday (27th June) they have lost. Sorry u21s

The semi final is indeed on Tuesday night, 27 June

That is a top, top performance from the first whistle. They did everything Aidy would have wanted. It wasn't done by lumping it forwards, it was controlled possession while also being a real threat from set pieces.

I cannot remember a save that Jordan Pickford has had to make - and that is credit to the whole team.

I think it shows the depth of the squad with Will Hughes on for Nathaniel Chalobah and Jacob Murphy replacing Nathan Redmond and no real difference to the performance.

It is has been a full performance - they have defended well and played good football.

Simon Adepetun: wouldn't want to be a youth football team manager right now with all the talent in the U21 U20 U17 what a headache it must be

Christian Evans: Excellent win for England but how many of these will make the senior side? About three when it should be higher

    Who are the three?
