MJC1973:Why is Moreno still at the club? Useless at defending. Along with Can conspire to give 2nd goal away. Both not good enough.

Johnny Magrinho: We've had ALL SUMMER to sort this defence out. Have we? No. Our conduct in the transfer market is laughable & will cost us!

Bill: If I was Klopp, I wouldn't be worrying about Coutinho going. Get rid of him if he wants to leave and invest heavily in that shocking defence with those funds.

  5. 'Abysmal defending'published at 13:09 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    Watford 2-1 Liverpool

    Danny Mills
Ex-Man City and England defender on 5 live Sport

Mane's goal was absolutely sublime. Great movement, slick passing and one-touch football - almost impossible to stop.

Whereas the two goals Liverpool have conceded have been the direct result of abysmal defending.

If this is how Liverpool are going to play this season they are going to end up losing more games this season that they need to, and probably miss out on the Champions League.

  6. 'A simple finish for Doucoure'published at 13:09 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    Watford 2-1 Liverpool

    Matthew Upson
Former Brighton defender at Vicarage Road for 5 live Sport

There was a whole host of Liverpool defenders on hand, any one of whom could have dealt with that cross for Watford's second. No-one did and it was a simple finish for Doucoure.

  7. WHAT A MISSpublished at 38 mins

    Watford 2-1 Liverpool

    Liverpool should be level.

Mohamed Salah, playing on the right, is all left foot.

He outmuscles Jose Holebas to make his way into the box, closes in on goal and prods a shot over the crossbar from six yards out.

A right-footed swinger was needed for that one. Not a potent finish from the £34m signing.

Richard Pettinger: Football supporters eh? Last night it was Wenger out; today Klopp is hopeless - the season is not yet 24 hours old!

Chris Ballett: The start to this season is absolutely comical - such a lack of quality defensively but it's so, so entertaining

  11. 'Cleverley was the architect'published at 13:04 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    Watford 2-1 Liverpool

    Derek Payne
Former Watford midfielder on BBC Three Counties Radio

A great response from Watford! The hosts needed a bit of possession and Tom Cleverley was the architect behind what was a great offensive move.

Doucoure did well to get himself into the box and he was rewarded with a tap-in from barely five yards out.

  12. goal

GOAL - Watford 2-1 Liverpoolpublished at 31 mins

    Abdoulaye Doucoure

    Watford

Forget Liverpool can do up top, they are a mess at the back.

Within a couple of minutes of conceding, Watford are back in front.

Abdoulaye Doucoure starts the move by laying the ball on to Stefano Okaka - who is offside.

The play is allowed to go on though, Trent Alexander-Arnold falls over in trying to clear a cross into the box and Doucoure can calmly slot into the net from a few yards out to finish what he began.

Joel Matip leads the Liverpool inquest. "How could the ball come so far without a visiting defender clearing it?" he asks.

    Watford 1-1 Liverpool

    Derek Payne

That goal was all Mane's making. Great, patient football from Liverpool who haven't panicked since falling behind.

Mane has looks the most dangerous Reds player and he received the ball from Firminho on the edge of the box. He finished so coolly, so impressively.

The game now rests on how Watford respond.

And that is what they can do.

They have not had anything to feed off, but this is a delightful equaliser from Liverpool.

Sadio Mane is at the heart of it, collecting the ball around 30 yards out and engaging a couple of Watford defenders.

He pops the ball off to Alberto Moreno, who nudges it inside and Mane runs over it.

In an instant, Emre Can plays it through on goal for Mane, who composes himself and angles a stunning finish into the top corner of the net.

    Sublime.

Johnny Magrinho: Klopp is naive if he thinks this defence is good enough. A goalkeeper and a centre-back is what we need - everyone knows it, so why doesn't he? Sigh..

Paul Challoner: This looks like an end of season display from Liverpool, with nothing to play for! Very poor so far.

Marcus Overend: Watford looking very confident and organised under Marco Silva a.k.a #TheNewPochettino...

  17. 'It was too easy'published at 12:57 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    Watford 1-0 Liverpool

    Matthew Upson
Former Brighton defender at Vicarage Road for 5 live Sport

Liverpool's zonal marking really wasn't executed very well when they conceded the goal. Okaka got the run on the entire defence and it was too easy for him to head home.

  18. Postpublished at 26 mins

    Watford 1-0 Liverpool

If Jurgen Klopp feels this defence is good enough to challenge for the Premier League title, then there is something seriously wrong.

They were all over the place for the goal and now Trent Alexander-Arnold gives the ball straight to Nordin Amrabat, who pops the ball into the box.

Reds goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has to scramble off his line to clear it away, with Stefano Okaka closing in.

In the Arsenal game last night some of the defending of crosses, from both sides, was abhorrent at times. Liverpool conceding the opening goal today was no different.

Zonal marking is fine but someone still has to attack the ball, and the Reds put Firmino in the most important part of the pitch at a corner - the centre of the six yard box. And every Liverpool player simply watched as Okaka ran and headed the ball.

It's not even schoolboy, it's just ridiculous!

    Watford 1-0 Liverpool

Early days, but new Watford gaffer Marco Silva has got his side playing here.

They look very well organised at the back and centre-half Younes Kaboul looks a man reborn.

Nathaniel Chalobah is giving them presence in the middle of the park and there is plenty of movement up top.

Promising signs for Hornets supporters, but we are only 23 minutes in.
