Gary Cahill is totally innocent there. Both players had their eyes on the ball as it looped up in the air. Cahill just used his arms as leverage. It is accidental.

Ouch!

Per Mertesacker is down on the ground, blood pouring from a cut above his eye it appears. The big defender had gone up to challenge for the ball with Gary Cahill but, with the bright sun in his eyes, didn't spot Cahill's elbow and planted his face into it.

Now it's Chelsea's turn to counter as an Arsenal attack breaks down. N'golo Kante takes the ball up the pitch but he doesn't have much support and by the time some Blue shirts join him the opportunity has gone.

Alexandre Lacazette was involved in the build-up to that effort, passing to Hector Bellerin before charging into the box. A good sign of what could be to come from the forward.

Spoke too soon! After a quick and precise counter, the record-signing from Lyon curls an effort from inside the box around Gary Cahill and it rattles the woodwork. Great chance, great move.

Safe to say we haven't seen much of Arsenal's new £45m striker Alexandre Lacazette yet. He's only had seven touches.

That's fewer than anyone else on the pitch in the opening quarter.

Now Pedro charges forward with the ball. He gets to the edge of the box before turning back and feeding a pass to Marcos Alonso, but his cross is long and goes out of play. Bit more even now.

The technical areas at Wembley are bigger than most but they still can't contain a ranting Antonio Conte, who is shouting so loud at his players that I can hear him from the back row of the press box. He's told to keep off the pitch by fourth official Graham Scott, but he's far from happy with the sloppy start made by the champions. Arsenal much the better side in the opening 20 minutes.

I thought this game might be a little bit of you have the ball for a while, we'll have the ball for a while, but there has been a bit in it so far.

Chelsea have lost their last three Community Shield matches - in 2010 against Manchester United, in 2012 versus Manchester City and in 2015 against Arsenal.

They are coming into this game more now as Cesc Fabregas sees a shot blocked but the loose ball falls in front of Michy Batshuayi in the box, but the striker is pulled up for a handball.

The referee has got his cards out early - but he is right to book Bellerin for that challenge.

Gary Cahill has certainly had a busy start to the afternoon but there are signs that Arsenal's all-action start is slowing down a bit now.

Hector Bellerin picks up the game's second yellow card as he slides in late on Marcos Alonso. Chelsea's Cesar Azpilicueta has already gone into the book.

I like Gary Cahill and I think he has developed into a top defender.

Chelsea will have to rely on his leadership qualities this season. He has to be another John Terry.

Finally Chelsea get up the pitch as Cesc Fabregas floats a ball over the defence for Pedro, who is wearing a face mask after colliding with Arsenal keeper David Ospina during a pre-season game in China, but the forward had just strayed offside.

Arsenal have come out of the blocks really sharp. They have dominated possession.

Arsenal come forward again as Xhaka picks out Danny Welbeck in the box with a cross but the forward's header is weak and straight at Thibaut Courtois.

Chelsea haven't got going yet at all.

That was basically a non-challenge from David Luiz. Pathetic and Chelsea have got away with it.

I would be worried if I was Antonio Conte.

Best chance of the game so far as Alex Iwobi gets down to the byeline - gliding past David Luiz - and cuts the ball back for Alexandre Lacazette but it hits the body of the Arsenal forward and deflects wide.

Strong start by Arsenal, Chelsea haven't had a look in.
