    Chris Waddle
Ex-Spurs and England winger on MOTD2 Extra

For Newcastle it is about survival, for Spurs they are looking to win it. On form Tottenham should win this game, but as we saw in results yesterday something could happen.

The worse thing for Newcastle is to go 1-0 down in 10 minutes and the crowd to get on their backs.

Looking forward to seeing Newcastle back in the top flight and players such as Jonjo Shelvey and Dwight Gayle have a point to prove.

If somebody is to sneak into that top seven then great. There is not a huge amount of difference in those teams.

Tottenham have gone backwards in the transfer market. They have got Wembley to contend with. That is not going to make it easy for Spurs.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is keen to sign Ajax central defender Davinson Sanchez.

Spurs are yet to buy anyone so far this summer, a situation causing concern for fans and players, judging by the comments of defender Danny Rose.

Pochettino has continued to insist Tottenham would be active before the 31 August transfer deadline.

Sanchez, 21, is a Colombian international who joined Ajax in 2016 for £3.8m and played for the Dutch side in their Europa League final defeat to Manchester United in May.

Spurs are thought to be hopeful of concluding a deal for a fee that could exceed the club record £30m they paid Newcastle for midfielder Moussa Sissoko 12 months ago.

Ex-Middlesbrough and Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer: "Coutinho is a very interesting one. He is a phenomenal player. Clearly he wants to leave now. Klopp has been very, very diplomatic. Obviously he wants to keep him because he is a world-class player.

"Liverpool run the risk if they do not allow him to go, then what they have got a player is very disgruntled player and he may not then put his weight in."

West Ham and England winger Michail Antonio: "As a player, you cannot turn Barcelona down. If Barcelona come knocking, you go. It is obvious he wants to leave.

"He is their best player, he does make things happen from nothing, but would you want a player who does not want to play at the club?

"I think the club should let him go because his head has been turned. He is never going to be the exact same player because his mind and his body is no longer at Liverpool. He has been a very good servant to the club."

West Ham winger Michail Antonio is not fit enough to play for West Ham at Manchester United today, but his performance on MOTD2 Extra has been really impressive.

Engaging, plenty of interesting points made and rather funny too.

On Philippe Coutinho's transfer saga, he said: "When Barca come knocking, you go."

  8. 'Danny Rose? There's nothing in it'published at 13:01 British Summer Time 13 August 2017

    Chris Waddle
Ex-Spurs and England winger on 5 live Sport

Danny Rose was caught out in an interview. In fact I don't really think he has said much wrong - of course he wants to win trophies. There is nothing in it.

However, if Danny Rose would prefer to leave Tottenham and perhaps return to a club in the north there is nothing really wrong with that, and I am sure he would attract plenty of interest.

West Ham and England winger Michail Antonio: "It is about bringing fresh faces, to challenge other people, so people in positions are not comfortable. Because it’s the same team you can already pick the front four, nine of the starting 11.

“It’s about having more in squad, when injuries happen or people fall off performances”.

    David Pleat
Former Spurs boss on BBC Radio 5 live

I was surprised by the timing of Danny Rose's comments. They are not the most subtle and his team-mates will not be too enamored by it. Rose was no more influencial than any of the other players when they finished second last season and third the previous.

Sometimes these things have been agent driven. I can think of several English full-backs like Ryan Bertrand, Luke Shaw, Ben Chilwell and Ryan Cresswell, so Rose is not the only left-back in the world, who flourished in a system devised by manager Mauricio Pochettino.

He has jumped the gun. The transfer deadline is 31 August, if I am not mistaken, so Tottenham will sign two or three players before that date. I would be very confident if I was a Spurs fan.

No signings, sold a key player and now one of the squad has been yapping to the tabloids.

Full-back Danny Rose apologised after making comments about the club's transfer policy in an interview with The Sun.

The left-back, 27, said in the Sun, external on Thursday that he felt he and his team-mates are underpaid and that Spurs need to sign well-known players and "not ones you had to Google".

But a day later Rose said the timing and manner of his comments was "ill-judged".

"I forgive him and now we move on," said Pochettino.

I think Benitez feels restricted because he is trying to achieve something at Newcastle and he has not been given the backing to do that.

He feels like the reigns are on and he's being pulled back, and I don't think that's the way Rafa likes to manage.

This is down to the relationship between manager Rafa Benitez and Mike Ashley. The owner said he can spend all the money he wants that they get from players.

Newcastle and Tottenham do need to get a move on though, because there are only a certain number of quality players available until 31 August.

Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez seemed frustrated earlier in the summer about the lack of investment the club has made.

They have managed to bring in Florian Dejeune, Christian Atsu and Jacob Murphy this summer.

Benitez, could not save the club from relegation last time round, said: "When I decided to stay, it was because I wanted to go back to the Premier League with this massive club.

"Still the transfer window is open, and I think that we can bring maybe some players in, and we have to move some players out."

Burnley striker Sam Vokes, who scored twice at Stamford Bridge: "Obviously when you are playing Chelsea with 11 men or 10 or nine, it is always going to be tough at the Bridge but we managed the game well

"I think the gaffer has got the lads working and everyone knows their jobs within the camp. Players that come in to the squad know their role and I think that showed yesterday.

There was a lot of noise coming out of Chelsea, so it was good for us to not get distracted by that. We concentrated and I think we gave a good account of ourselves."

Ex-Middlesbrough and Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer: “The rumblings throughout the course of the summer are now coming to affect. It is affecting Conte in the way he is behaving and reacting. He did not defend his players yesterday, it is not a happy camp.”
