Justin P: Last night I dropped Jesus and De Bruyne for Mane and Salah in my fantasy football!! Typical.

Ray O'Brien: Selling the Oxlade-Chamberlain 4-0 curse for 35 mil was an absolute stroke of genius by Arsenal.

Paul-Joseph: Manchester City giving Liverpool fans the full 'Arsenal experience' today.

Tim Collingwood: Though deserved, the red card ruined this game. It could have been a belter. Instead it was a training exercise for City.

  2. GREAT SAVE!published at 87 mins

    Manchester City 4-0 Liverpool

Good save Simon Mignolet! Almost five as Leroy Sane puts a chance on a plate for Sergio Aguero but on the stretch he can only send it down the middle and Mignolet scrambles to clear.

  3. The Sane goalpublished at 14:20 British Summer Time 9 September 2017

    Manchester City 4-0 Liverpool

Benjamin Mendy had put in at least five good crosses from the left and he got a deserved assist when Leroy Sane touched in the fourth goal.

I would like to see Aguero and Jesus play together regularly. I don't think they will but if they do, you are talking about a lot of goals...

I would suggest it's unwise to make many conclusions from this scoreline - the game changed completely with that first-half red card for Sadio Mane.

Pep's smiling - he looked up to the stand, waved and punched the air as Sane scored City's fourth. It's been so comfortable second half for them.

Although they have a decent sized squad, defensively, I am not sure Liverpool will be able to handle the amount of football they have to play this season.

  8. YELLOW CARDpublished at 79 mins

    Manchester City 4-0 Liverpool

Emre Can was outstanding in the win against Arsenal. He's had a bit of a mare this afternoon, especially since moving back into defence. He's now booked for hooking down Sergio Aguero. Send for Kevin de Bruyne - a rubbish free-kick though.

  9. Four starpublished at 14:13 British Summer Time 9 September 2017

    Man City 4-0 Liverpool

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport at the Etihad Stadium

This has been a memorable day in many ways for Manchester City against opponents they have not enjoyed the best of results against in the past.

Indeed, even after today they have still only scored four or more against Liverpool on nine occasions and not at all since 1937.

Amazingly, the first time they did it - in 1906 - they lost, by 5 goals to four. Must have been an epic.

Charlie Smith: The biggest 'defensive issue' Liverpool are playing away at Man City with 10 men. Stop overreacting everyone.

Khan Karn: Klopp should have brought on sturridge at 2-0. Still the best striker by miles at the club. Poor decision.

JavelBleach: Until the red card, I fancied Liverpool to win this. It's the degree to which these rules decide games and championships.

It has been all City in this second half.

Liverpool are struggling to have possession out of their own half (right heat map) while Pep Guardiola's side are continuing to push forward, particularly down the left (left heat map).

I thought Sane had been quite sloppy since he had come on but that's a great finish with his left foot. A great goal. Got to give him credit.

    Leroy Sane

Emre Can won't want to watch this second half back. He's been chasing lost causes all too often as City get a fourth. Leroy Sane sprints in behind the German, finds Benjamin Mendy on the left and his cross is turned in smartly by Sane at the near post.

    Mendy deserves that.

I know they have had a man sent off but defensively Liverpool have been poor. The three goals from City have been easy.

    Manchester City 3-0 Liverpool

Liverpool haven't had a shot since the 31st minute. And remember that the first half was 54 minutes long or so.

Benjamin Mendy has another cross cleared.

  16. GREAT SAVE!published at 72 mins

Something happened! A good save is what as Benjamin Mendy's low cross to the near post is sliced on goal by Joel Matip, it's flying in for an own goal but Simon Mignolet reacts well to push it out.

  17. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 71 mins

A forgotten man returns. Eliaquim Mangala comes on for Manchester City, his first appearance since May 2016. He replaces Nicolas Otamendi.

Lovely football now from Manchester City. They are really relaxed now, they have managed the game really well today. It could easily have been a sloppy second half with Liverpool down to ten men, and they could have taken their foot off the gas but they really upped the tempo at the right time.

  19. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 66 mins

    Manchester City 3-0 Liverpool

The talking point of this game will continue to be the sending off of Sadio Mane in the first half. By the letter of the law Liverpool would seem to have no leg to stand on in terms of an appeal but I wonder if they might anyway. Jurgen Klopp was incensed at the time.

Dominic Solanke is on for Liverpool to give Roberto Firmino a break.

Paul L: Lots of boos for James Milner as he comes on for Liverpool. Quite classless from the City fans for a guy who served so well.

Jay: Man City fans boo Milner because??
