A must win game for Liverpool?

Jurgen Klopp's side have won just one of their last eight matches in all competitions, a run that got former boss Brendan Rodgers the sack.

The Reds' return to the Champions League has yielded two draws so far, stretching their winless run in the competition to seven games.

The Man City team that started their first Champions League game, against Napoli on 14 September 2011

Manchester City are one of the favourites to win the Champions League this season but they were complete novices when they last faced Napoli here, on their debut in Europe’s elite club competition (under its current moniker) in September 2011.

David Silva is the only City player who featured in that game who starts tonight… although Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure are on the bench. Skipper Vincent Kompany is the only other player involved in their 18-man squad that day who is still at the club.

What else has changed? Well, nobody in the stands was booing the Uefa anthem then, and by the looks of things the City players weren’t totally sure who should be standing, or crouching, for the obligatory pre-match team photo – especially Aleksandar Kolarov.

That might partly explain why things did not go to plan when the game began, although Kolarov did get something right on the night with a trademark bullet free-kick to rescue a late point for his side after Edinson Cavani had put Napoli ahead.

On form England international Raheem Sterling says his long-term future lies at Manchester City.

Arsenal were keen to sign the forward in the summer as part of a potential deal involving Alexis Sanchez.

City boss Pep Guardiola said at the time there was "zero chance" of the 22-year-old leaving.

Asked if he would be remaining at the club for the long term, Sterling said: "Yes. I signed for five years. I have two and a half left."

Two played, two won, six scored, one conceded.

The 12-time European champions Real Madrid and Tottenham have an identical record in Group H.

So crucial is the game that the La Liga side's manager Zinedine Zidane has labelled the meeting as the "first group final".

The legendary Frenchman added: "Tottenham are not just about Harry Kane and we have prepared for this game well."

Not just about Harry Kane? A dig at Guardiola...?

Man City v Napoli (19:45 BST)

    Ian Brown
BBC Radio 5 live at Etihad Stadium

Kings of Europe? Already? In October?

Actually the Neapolitan press are not guilty of a premature coronation. It's just a wish to highlight the fact that Napoli have made the best start of any club in the major European leagues.

Napoli have won eight out of eight - better than PSG and better than tonight's opponents at the Etihad.

Nonetheless they will be underdogs against Manchester City. Not least because (and the Italian papers forget to mention this) they have already been beaten in this group by Shakhtar.

Pep Guardiola says Napoli have been playing "perfectly" while his opposite number, the former banker Maurizio Sarri, says he's "depressed" that City are so good that second place is the best Napoli can hope for.

Amid the love-in there is a fair degree of kidology.

But as it says in the match programme, neither side is conditioned to win ugly... and with 71 goals shared between them this season the two teams are capable of treating us all.

As expected, Liverpool start with Loris Karius in goal, with Simon Mignolet on the bench.

More surprising is Jurgen Klopp's decision to put club captain Jordan Henderson also as one of the substitutes. James Milner starts and captains the side, while Trent Alexander-Arnold replaces Joe Gomez at right-back.

Liverpool XI: Karius, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Lovren, Moreno, Wijnaldum, Can, Milner, Salah, Firmino, Coutinho.

Maribor XI: Handanovic, Viler, Suler, Rajcevic, Milec, Vrohec, Kabha, Bohar, Ahmedi, Kramaric, Tavares.

    This one could end 6-6.

Both Manchester City and Napoli have started their league campaigns in stunning fashion.

Pep Guardiola's side have found the net 29 times in their opening eight Premier League games, while Maurizio Sarri's men - who have won all eight Serie A games - have scored just three fewer.

The Naples club, though, have never won an away game against English opposition, while City area unbeaten at Etihad Stadium in their last 10 games in the competition.

Will Tottenham look to match up Madrid's midfield diamond? Mauricio Pochettino's team selection would suggest so.

Fernando Llorente's inclusion means Spurs will play two up top in the absence of the suspended Dele Alli, while Moussa Sissoko is likely to play more centrally than the man he has replaced, Son Heung-min.

Ivory Coast right-back Serge Aurier is preferred to Kieran Trippier in Pochettino's final change.

Belgium midfielder Mousa Dembele again misses out through injury, while England left-back Danny Rose is back on the bench after a nine-month injury lay-off.

Spurs XI: Lloris, Aurier, Alderweireld, Sanchez, Vertonghen, Sissoko, Dier, Winks, Eriksen, Llorente, Kane.

If you missed the big Premier League news from earlier today...

Leicester City have sacked manager Craig Shakespeare just four months after he signed a three-year deal to take the job on a permanent basis.

Shakespeare, 53, succeeded title winner Claudio Ranieri in February, initially on a temporary basis.

After steering the Foxes away from trouble to finish in 12th place, he was given the job permanently in June.
