Save! Wayne Rooney's tenacity sees him work a great opportunity, only for the shot to end up straight at David de Gea. A surging run from Rooney, who lost the ball and regained it, but fired straight at the Spain keeper from about six yards out.

There's a United fan holding a sign that states Wayne Rooney is a "legend". The players are back out.

I don't think I'm with you there, Chris. I think it's been pretty decent. You're right about Everton needing a striker, though. Their summer recruitment was quite lopsided.

Chris H: Really poor quality game, I'd say Everton having a striker up top would benefit both sides by creating some space.

Alex: Am I the only United fan that thinks Mkhi shouldn't play? Poor control and constantly loses possession. Get Martial on.

Philip Mulvaney: Don't want say this early in season but Koeman out. No tactics, no clue. Joke.

That's good to hear. Any sort of half-time shirt exchange is a crime against football.

No exchange of shirts but a handshake between Wayne Rooney and David de Gea at half-time.

The pair had a good chat too as they made their way towards the tunnel.

Won't stop Rooney trying to score in the second-half of course, or De Gea trying to stop him.

Three toots of the ref's whistle. I reckon Everton would have taken this scoreline, given the way this match began.

Pressure on Everton at the end of the half, the men in blue once again sitting deep. Another clearance from Ashley Williams. Romelu Lukaku and Marouane Fellaini patrol the edge of the D like nightclub bouncers. Almost a mix-up between Phil Jagielka and Jordan Pickford, but the keeper manages to gather Juan Mata's dinked pass.

There are thick stripes running the width of the pitch, two different shades of green. Jose Mourinho has returned to his seat and has his head resting on his arms, like a man considering taking a nap. The sun has returned for these last few minutes of the first half. Cuco Martina gets Everton into trouble, but Ashley Williams heads clear.

Brilliant defending. Romelu Lukaku tries to get on the end of Marcus Rashford's through ball, but Phil Jagielka busts a lung to slide in and just do enough to see the ball out. From the resulting corner, Eric Bailly is in there, but his header is snuffed out.

There is a different feel at Old Trafford this season. Under Louis van Gaal and in Jose Mourinho's first season in charge you sensed some fans preferred to read the programme or check out social media on their phones rather than watch the football. Now it feels like all eyes are focused on the pitch.

Incredible. Sir Alex Ferguson is sitting next to Simply Red singer Mick Hucknall. What is the conversation like between those two? Mick's hair is almost blocking Fergie's view. Good from Jordan Pickford, off his line to the edge of the box to snuff out a United attack.

There is nothing quite like watching one of your old players mess up for their new one.

Fair to say the general reaction amongst the Everton fans at that Romelu Lukaku miss was one of hilarity.

Most of them are stood up anyway and they reacted by waving - and making a few other gestures - towards their former star forward.

Noise inside OT, echoing around the vast arena. Wayne Rooney and Marouane Fellaini jump for the ball, with the Belgian coming down rubbing the back of his head. More ground covered by Cuco Martina, but the cross doesn't beat the first man. Jose Mourinho is up off his seat. Everton have improved enough for the United boss to have his say.

Good save from David de Gea, stopping a low header from Tom Davies with his legs. The flag goes up afterwards, but De Gea wasn't to know that. Everton are getting some joy down their right through Cuco Martina.

It was Michael Keane with a terrible pass. It was a square ball.

He looks a bit nervous when he gets the ball. He needs someone with experience to calm him down a bit.

What a miss! Romelu Lukaku has a diamond-encrusted chance against his former club, but doesn't even hit the target. Put through, after a mistake by Michael Keane, only Jordan Pickford to beat, but the ball goes past the left-hand post from somewhere near the penalty spot. 50 pence foot.
