Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez: "When you get just one point at home we cannot be happy but against a top six like Liverpool, creating so many chances, you have to be a little bit happy. The way our players were working, tackling and trying to win every ball was fantastic.

"We have two or three situations when we could be more composed on the ball but we lost these situations. This could make a difference if we can score then they are under pressure and can make mistakes.

Asked about his side's start to the season, Benitez said: "If you see the points and see we are a promoted team then we are pleased but against Huddersfield and Brighton we could have done something more. We have what we have. We are happy with that.

And on playing against his former side Liverpool, the Spaniard said: "Obviously my relationship with the Liverpool fans is very good. My relationship with Liverpool fans comes from years, here it is a fantastic relationship too and I am enjoying every minute."

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson speaking to BBC Sport: "It feels like we are saying same thing. We do so many good things but come away frustrated. It is a strange feeling. We created good chances to win the game and were comfortable but overall we are frustrated.

"We have to keep going, keep creating and they will turn into goals. Saying that, we did keep going. I feel once we get one they will all start going in.

"Philippe (Coutinho) was brilliant again today. He deserved his goal. He is a great person, a fantastic player for this team.

"We all love him. A lot of things happen in football. Phil has been brilliant. He has put his frustration into games and is playing with freedom. He has been fantastic."

Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp tells BBC Sport: "I am disappointed, frustrated, whatever you want. Away at Newcastle for each team will be a difficult place to play. We scored a wonderful goal and created wonderful chances. We shot the ball over the goal even when it was empty. We created five or six outstanding, big chances. Usually we score with one of them. I didn’t see one more chances for Newcastle.

"They got one chance and scored. That doesn’t feel too fair. We had a clear penalty. I don’t know what he has to do – pull the shirt off him?

"If you don’t help yourself no one else help you. It will be like this until we score. We play like this it makes sense that we play like this usually we score in situations like this. We have to accept this and carry on."

From a Newcastle point of view it was a very good, solid, performance - in particular in the second half. Liverpool only really had one opportunity.

Liverpool didn't have enough answers to the rigid, compact shape of Newcastle. Their pace of play was too slow.

The defence again has cost them. Liverpool have a long way to go if are to be challenging for the title. It wont be happening this season.

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez is enjoying this, walking on to the pitch and punching the air in delight.

A point a piece, well-deserved for Newcastle.
