  3. 'One point is a positive'published at 18:28 British Summer Time 15 October 2017

    Southampton 2-2 Newcastle

    Southampton

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino speaking to Match of the Day 2: "The reaction was good at the end, our best 20 minutes. In defence we were good and compact. At the same time we couldn't control too much the second goal.

"We knew it would be difficult to penetrate them. You have to be balanced and move them. Maybe with two strikers we had to deliver a little bit earlier.

"In the Premier League, most of the teams have the quality to score and we can't concede these sorts of goals.

"The fans were behind us, pushing our team, at the end we had our best moment. We never controlled the game totally.

"I knew it would be difficult, but one point is a positive."

  5. 'We have to keep improving'published at 18:22 British Summer Time 15 October 2017

    Southampton 2-2 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez on Sky Sports: "At least we get a point and the team showed we finished with ambition.

"We gave them the chance to score with the penalty. We did well, but still conceded two goals, so something was wrong.

"We have to work hard, keep improving. We can be better and we have to be better, and hopefully we will be better. We have to defend better, attack better and keep the ball better."

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez speaking to Match of the Day 2: "I have to be happy because we have drawn, at the same disappointed because we could have won.

"We created chances to score goals, in the end I thought it was a good performance from the team. My bigger disappointment was to see 3,500 on Sunday, playing away, not getting the three points. Hopefully they can be happy with the point.

"We were more or less in control, they had to take more risks, when we conceded the goal the reaction was good.

"We have to be better in defence, have a little bit more possession. We were still trying to score, we finished strong.

"I wanted a little bit more, we worked so hard."

  7. 'A chaotic game'published at 18:20 British Summer Time 15 October 2017

    Southampton 2-2 Newcastle

    Southampton

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino: "It was a chaotic game. We conceded a couple of soft goals. In the last 20 minutes we could win the game but we could also lose it.

"As a manager I don't like this sort of game. We scored two goals but we didn't always control the game. Newcastle won a lot of second balls because we played with two strikers."

    Southampton 2-2 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle goalscorer Isaac Hayden on Sky Sports: "We defended really well and limited them to few clear cut chances, but the Premier League is all about fine margins and giving the penalty away was crucial.

"More experience for our young side, they are always improving and getting better and better.

"It's a solid start, but you take it game by game. You look at it and see how you could have improved."

There were muted boos from the Southampton fans at half-time and at the end of the second half they were applauded off so that tells you what you need to know. Maybe the travelling with the international break means it takes players a while to get going. Some of those long trips do have an impact on the players.

    Southampton 2-2 Newcastle

    Southampton

Southampton's Dusan Tadic speaking to Sky Sports: "Second half we played more direct. We scored a quick goal, but conceded and showed character to come back.

"We need to win these kinds of games. We can play in different ways, in the last couple of games we have created lots of chances.

"To come back is good for character, but I think we can play better."

    Southampton 2-2 Newcastle

    Steve Claridge
Ex-Leicester striker, BBC Radio 5 live at St Mary's

If only the game could have started as it finished! It was a slow burner but the teams went at each other hammer and tongs second half. Really good stuff after the break. It was good fun. The second half had everything - some mistakes, some bits of brilliance - and probably a fair result in the end.
