He's just signed permanently and now Mikel Merino is on for Newcastle, he replaces goalscorer Ayoze Perez. Matt Ritchie has a shot blocked away. A third one for Newcastle would surely mean game over.
Southampton 1-2 Newcastle
There were 87 seconds between the two goals at the start of the half. Manolo Gabbiadini thinks about a penalty appeal but the foul goes against him for shirt tugging.

I don't know if Nathan Redmond as injured in that challenge but he's come off. On comes Sofiane Boufal.

That could easily been a sending off for Yedlin. That was a terrible decision and a terrible tackle.

I tell you what Andy, i don't think I've ever seen that happen at all in all of my days. has anyone? I think Paolo di Canio did it while in charge of Swindon.

Andy White: Rarely see a goalkeeper subbed because of having a poor game. Today would be one of those where it would be a good idea.
Southampton 1-2 Newcastle
Not a game which looked likely to contain two goals in a minute, but it's a very entertaining start to the second half.
Newcastle defender DeAndre Yedlin is now perhaps lucky not to be sent off. Already booked, he's late on Nathan Redmond. And high! That's a yellow all day long. Even on a Sunday.

It's an old adage but Southampton have completely switched off. It's a run through midfield without it being checked. I am not sure Fraser Forster has covered himself in glory, though. He should do better from the initial shot, but leaves his near post wide open. He has to stop that with the angle. If a player pulls it back and scores then fair enough, there is nothing you can do. It must be soul destroying for Mauricio Pellegrino.

I am glad I kept my big mouth shut for longer because I thought Gabbiadini should have passed it to Cedric. He keeps it, and keeps it, then finds just enough of an angle to shoot.
In the end it went through a defender's legs but it's a great piece of play. He knew exactly where he was and scores a fine goal.
Ayoze Perez
Southampton were level for circa 90 seconds! It's another goal that Fraser Forster won't want to see. Ayoze Perez shoots low from 20 yards, the England man saves but can only push it out and from a tight angle Perez wraps his foot around the ball and finds the back of the net!
Manolo Gabbiadini
How has he got that in?! A brilliant solo goal from Manolo Gabbiadini but one that is a defensive horrorshow for Newcastle.
A long ball over the top is well taken by Gabbiadini but after his first touch he is facing the corner flag with plenty of defenders for company.
However he is allowed to dribble back away from goal, to the edge of the area, still no danger, but he is then allowed to snake a low shot in from 20 yards!
A cracking finish. But someone should have stopped him. There were at least five defenders around him.

Newcastle hit the bar! Ayoze Perez puts a cross in, it loops up off I think Joselu and hits the very top of the crossbar!
Fraser Forster was running back towards his own goal, no clue where the ball was. Never a good look for a keeper...

Here come the teams. Urgency needed from the hosts. Charlie Austin?

Yemi: Shane Long is a Championship Level striker at best. What has happened to Gabbiadinni ?
Mark Russell:#wemarchon, external towards relegation at this rate. No urgency. No opportunities, no chance.

Again, a reminder that Southampton have failed to score in eight of their last nine home Premier League matches, with the exception being a 3-2 win against West Ham in August.

Good opportunities and positions for Southampton but not enough quality or anticipation. They are the reasons why they haven't scored.

Southampton are now relegation candidates. This is woeful. What happened to them?
