The game is opening up. Southampton committing men forwards and replacing Oriol Romeu with Steven Davis, Newcastle counter-attacking into the space and seeing Christian Atsu fire over the top.

He's just signed permanently and now Mikel Merino is on for Newcastle, he replaces goalscorer Ayoze Perez. Matt Ritchie has a shot blocked away. A third one for Newcastle would surely mean game over.

There were 87 seconds between the two goals at the start of the half. Manolo Gabbiadini thinks about a penalty appeal but the foul goes against him for shirt tugging.

That could easily been a sending off for Yedlin. That was a terrible decision and a terrible tackle.

Andy White: Rarely see a goalkeeper subbed because of having a poor game. Today would be one of those where it would be a good idea.

    Southampton 1-2 Newcastle

Not a game which looked likely to contain two goals in a minute, but it's a very entertaining start to the second half.

Newcastle defender DeAndre Yedlin is now perhaps lucky not to be sent off. Already booked, he's late on Nathan Redmond. And high! That's a yellow all day long. Even on a Sunday.

  9. 'Forster hasn't covered himself in glory'published at 17:11 British Summer Time 15 October 2017

It's an old adage but Southampton have completely switched off. It's a run through midfield without it being checked. I am not sure Fraser Forster has covered himself in glory, though. He should do better from the initial shot, but leaves his near post wide open. He has to stop that with the angle. If a player pulls it back and scores then fair enough, there is nothing you can do. It must be soul destroying for Mauricio Pellegrino.

  10. 'Great piece of play by Gabbiadini'published at 17:10 British Summer Time 15 October 2017

I am glad I kept my big mouth shut for longer because I thought Gabbiadini should have passed it to Cedric. He keeps it, and keeps it, then finds just enough of an angle to shoot.

In the end it went through a defender's legs but it's a great piece of play. He knew exactly where he was and scores a fine goal.

GOAL - Southampton 1-2 Newcastlepublished at 51 mins

    Ayoze Perez

Southampton were level for circa 90 seconds! It's another goal that Fraser Forster won't want to see. Ayoze Perez shoots low from 20 yards, the England man saves but can only push it out and from a tight angle Perez wraps his foot around the ball and finds the back of the net!

GOAL - Southampton 1-1 Newcastlepublished at 50 mins

    Manolo Gabbiadini

How has he got that in?! A brilliant solo goal from Manolo Gabbiadini but one that is a defensive horrorshow for Newcastle.

A long ball over the top is well taken by Gabbiadini but after his first touch he is facing the corner flag with plenty of defenders for company.

However he is allowed to dribble back away from goal, to the edge of the area, still no danger, but he is then allowed to snake a low shot in from 20 yards!

A cracking finish. But someone should have stopped him. There were at least five defenders around him.

  13. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 47 mins

    Southampton 0-1 Newcastle

Newcastle hit the bar! Ayoze Perez puts a cross in, it loops up off I think Joselu and hits the very top of the crossbar!

Fraser Forster was running back towards his own goal, no clue where the ball was. Never a good look for a keeper...
