Rafa Benitez has become an increasingly frustrated figure in his technical area in the last 10 minutes as Southampton enjoy their best spell of the game. He seems unhappy his side are sitting so deep and was enraged when Kevin Friend gave Southampton a free-kick which almost led to a goal.

Southampton are starting to make inroads now. We only have five minutes until half-time but they have more tempo, movement and space.

So much Southampton play without ever looking like scoring. They put together a wonderful one-touch move which brings rich applause from the stands, superb interplay but you still didn't think a goal was coming. Manolo Gabbiadini has a shot blocked at the end of it.

This game is all about movement of players in front of the ball and there hasn't been enough from Southampton's players. Also some of the decision making from Southampton's players when they have got in good positions is mystifying.

Chrissy Waddle put Jonjo Shelvey in his team for the World Cup when we asked him the other week. I can't see Gareth Southgate picking up the phone now though.

Shane Long has a sight of goal but his shot is easily blocked. Southampton having all of the ball but not much in the way of creation or spark.

What a ball that is from Maya Yoshida. He has whipped it around the Newcastle defender and it is begging for someone to get on the end of it.

Now is perhaps the time to remind everyone that the Saints have failed to score in eight of their last nine home Premier League matches, with the exception being a 3-2 win against West Ham in August.

If Manchester City fans have the best bang-per-buck when it comes to season tickets, Southampton must be close to the other end of the scale.

Strong response from the Saints as they almost level straight away. Not great goalkeeping again as Rob Elliot comes to claim a corner and is beaten to it by Virgil van Dijk, his header glances wide of the vacant goal.

I am looking at that initially and thinking there must be a deflection to fool Fraser Forster, but it hasn't so I don't know why the Southampton goalkeeper has dived that way. He has maybe tried to second guess it. That's poor goalkeeping.

Fraser Forster takes a touch, tried to be clever there instead of just getting it up the pitch. That's a lucky escape. Both sides are similar to each other in the way they play. They could cancel each other out today.

It's warming up. At the other end Fraser Forster is slow to clear his lines and is charged down by Ayoze Perez, before Matt Ritchie wastes a presentable crossing opportunity.

Should score! Or at least hit the target. Dusan Tadic is in oceans of space at the far post but can only loft his header on to the roof of the net. Good cross from Nathan Redmond.

I'm not a fan of these hand clappers that Southampton have given out. Too family friendly for me! I like the way they didn't put them in the end where all the hardcore Saints are.
