Globalphilately: This Kane bloke can play a bit, and deserves that record

Sule Sadiq: Tottenham are showing today that they are well and truly the Harry Kane team. They'd be mid table at best without him.

Daniel Tinkler: Imagine how many Kane would have if he scored in August and hadn't been out injured for seven weeks in February. Probably more.

I don't think so. The second touch hit the knee and he stopped suddenly. Son's bad control has let him down.

  3. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 41 mins

    Tottenham 2-0 Southampton

Son Heung-min tumbles under a challenge by Jack Stephens inside the area, Son looks at referee Graham Scott... and slams the ground in frustration. No penalty given.

Half time cannot come soon enough for Southampton.

GregoryGoals: Premier League has had some great strikers; Dwight Yorke, Savo Milosevic, Alan Shearer, Van Nistelrooy, Henry, John Carew etc. None better than Harry Kane. He will be talked of like Eusebio, Pele, Messi and Ronaldo in years to come

Harry Kane - it was a simple tap in yes, but he held his position. It was an exquisite passing goal that unlocked a Southampton defence - one that you now do worry for.

    Who else?

Tottenham's tricky trio combine again - Dele Alli to Son Heung-min, who places the ball across the goal for Harry Kane to tap in.

That goal moves him above Lionel Messi as the top scorer for club and country in Europe in 2017 with his 55th goal. He's also on for his eighth hat-trick of the year.

    Unbelievable.

Only season goal records count as you play each team away and home. Calendar records means the fixtures can favour you in that 12 month period. It's a nonsense record. Too many variables.

    Rick, Manchester.

That's a bit harsh Rick - or does he have a point?

"SHOOOOOTTT" bellow the Tottenham fans as Harry Kane gets the ball around 35 yards from goal. "Why not?" Kane thinks... and launches an effort well, well over the bar.

I think he's got a free pass for the odd stinker of a shot.

Another goal for the striker and he will have scored the most goals for club and country in Europe with 55.

That goal for Tottenham does appear to have sparked Southampton into life. They are enjoying a decent spell at the moment, although not doing anything to worry Hugo Lloris.

Rachel T: Bullet header from Kane to shoot down Shearer's record!

Thomas Hollern: Taking nothing away from Harry Kane, it's great to break records, but they mean nothing if you don't win trophies and titles. Am sure he would happily swap the record for a winners medal

Paul Lummis: Proper chuffed for Harry Kane - and more so that England has a striker of his quality to turn to.

Eriatha: How does Forster not come for that? It passes right in front of him. Terrible goalkeeping.

He leads the line so well. He's getting that confidence of scoring and it just has to spread to the other players. Harry's almost going to be one of the older heads. You need goalscorers and that's where Harry could be key.

I remember Huddersfield fans applauding Harry Kane's performance against their side earlier this season and he deserves that kind of reaction wherever he goes.

He's in the sort of goalscoring form we might not see again for years and it is a privilege to see him live.

Can't see him stopping at one for the day either.

Well done Harry Kane, fantastic. Eriksen has a shot, and Harry Kane makes a couple of strides in at the far post and most of us from three yards out would have buried it like Kane did. The worry is that may open the flood gates. Well done Harry Kane - fantastic for him.

  19. CLOSE!published at 25 mins

    Tottenham 1-0 Southampton

Oh my, how lucky is Hugo Lloris!

Southampton come incredibly close to an instant reply as Sofiane Boufal dances through the Spurs defence and whacks a shot at goal, Lloris parries and Danny Rose's subsequent header back to his keeper is a bit too high, causing Lloris to scramble back and claw the ball onto the post.

Did it cross the line? Replays show it didn't. Tottenham escape.

    RECORD BROKEN!

He was always going to do it, wasn't he?

Harry Kane breaks Alan Shearer's 22-year-old record for most Premier League goals scored in a calendar year with his 37th in 2017.

In the end, it's the most unassuming of goals as he thumps in a header from a free-kick.
