Relegation fears prompted both clubs to sack their managers earlier in the campaign but, while Everton's decision has paid off handsomely, West Brom remain stuck in the bottom three and their eight-year stay in the Premier League looks in real danger.

After five games in charge, Alan Pardew is still looking for his first win and West Brom's chronic goal shortage remains unresolved.

Everton were 18th, two points behind Albion, when Ronald Koeman was dismissed two months ago. David Unsworth brought some improvement but they've kicked on magnificently under Sam Allardyce.

They are unbeaten under him and have taken 11 points from a possible 15, which has left them looking up rather than down.

    Boro appoint Pulis...

    Sensing sarcasm here.....

Daniel Hodson: I heard that one of the big clubs after pulis was Ajax with the other being Swansea. They both play the same way pulis tries to play so make sense.

Mark Harrison: Finally Gibson shows he is tough and not the "nice chairman" of football. Brave move but definitely in the Boro's best interests

Huddersfield goalkeeper Jonas Lossl is expected to play despite suffering a suspected broken nose at Southampton.

Elias Kachunga, Philip Billing, Michael Hefele and Jon Gorenc Stankovic all remain sidelined because of injuries.

Stoke could again be without Erik Peters, so Kevin Wimmer may continue to deputise at left-back.

Teenager Tom Edwards is likely to keep his place with Glen Johnson still a fitness doubt, while Bruno Martins Indi and Jese Rodriguez remain out.

It's ironic that despite the positivity surrounding Huddersfield and the negativity engulfing Stoke, a two-goal victory for the visitors on Boxing Day would actually see them rise above their hosts in the table.

It is, of course, expectation which is the key difference, as the Terriers have quite rightly delighted in the consolidation of their first Premier League campaign at the halfway point.

Heartened by their vital win against West Brom, Stoke will certainly feel that they can approach this match with a great deal more conviction, and with a visit to Chelsea next in their schedule they will surely feel this is the best opportunity to further banish any lingering anxiety?

    Simon Brotherton

Harry Maguire's stoppage-time equaliser against Manchester United on Saturday left Jose Mourinho chastising his team, while 10-man Leicester enjoyed what felt like a minor victory.

They head south unbeaten in the last seven on the road and already have more points away from home than in the whole of last season.

In contrast, Watford's form appears to have fallen off a cliff in recent weeks. Saturday's 1-0 reverse at Brighton was their fourth defeat in a row and they have only taken one point from the last 18 available.

For all the signs of progress, their current total of 22 points is exactly the same as at this stage last year.

  13. Early team newspublished at 11:55 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2017

    Watford v Leicester (15:00 GMT)

Watford have Abdoulaye Doucoure and Marvin Zeegelaar available after suspension but Troy Deeney serves the second game of a four-match ban.

Will Hughes is not expected to recover in time from a hamstring injury, while Isaac Success still has a knee problem.

Daniel Amartey is suspended for Leicester as a result of his dismissal for two bookings against Manchester United on Saturday.

Danny Simpson sustained a hamstring injury in that game and is a doubt.

    Pulis named Middlesbrough boss

Middlesbrough say they fended off "strong interest" from two other clubs to secure Tony Pulis as their manager.

Pulis was sacked by West Brom towards the end of last month and replaces Garry Monk, who left Middlesbrough just before Christmas.

"We’re delighted to appoint Tony as our new manager," Middlesbrough said in a statement. "His experience and knowledge speaks for itself and he has a tremendous track record.

"We’re excited by this appointment and by what Tony can bring to this football club. There was strong interest from two other clubs, and we’re delighted Tony has decided to join us.

"There’s no disguising that 2017 has not been a happy year for any of us, but we’ve refocused and we’re looking forward to the future."
