When teams face France in Paris, the manager's mantra is often centred around silencing the traditionally vociferous crowd early in the game.

That will be a tall order for Wales tonight. The hosts have started brightly and, with drum beating relentlessly to keep them in beat, the home fans are getting rowdy already.

Blaise Matuidi has the first proper effort for the home side, firing a low shot from the edge of the box just past the post.

Soon after, Antoine Griezmann's low pass is sliced wide by Corentin Tolisso.

As you'd expect, France are dominating possession in Paris. Wales are digging in, though.

    Chances!

From one end to the other. Jordan Pickford comes to England's rescue to clear the ball away from Timo Werner following a weak back-pass from Harry Maguire.

Then, down the other end, Jamie Vardy's low cross flies in front of Tammy Abraham and is fired into the side-netting by Kieran Trippier.

    Decent start.

Nathan Pressley: Can’t see how people are blaming Southgate tonight, the inexperience he’s using is because of injuries to the players he’d rather use!

Lost Jim Scarecrow: Southgate's job before the WC is simple; we have 4 exceptional attacking players - Kane, Rashford, Alli & Sterling. They need a solid platform to play in front of, but the chemistry won't come if they're unavailable for games like this.

Andy White:Just wondered how many double barreled players have played for England? Matt Le Tissier doesn't count or Le Saux.

Howard Thompson: Playing youth not the problem, but which youth. Surely Gray and Davies’ form more deserving than Abraham and RLC?!

Michael Upton: Anyone calling tonight's team the "worst ever" needs to remember how teams full of much higher-rated players have failed miserably in all recent tournaments. Golden Generation a bunch of failures & the Euro 2016 crop were humiliated, Kane, Alli and all.

Jonathan O'Callaghan: Eric Dier has gone from relative unknown in 2014, to England captain in 2017. Not bad.

Ray O'Brien: We complain when youth don't get a chance and we complain when they do. Let's not forget that Germany's road to being World champions began with a very youthful team selection in South Africa seven years back. Inexperience doesn't always spell doom.

Ste Adams: Not a full strength team, but I’d be interested in seeing how that back 5 play together - with the exception of Trippier for Walker, it looks promising.

Robert Bodsworth: It isn't time to look to the future just before a World Cup. We should be trying to identify our best squad and this isn't it.

Thom Hamilton: Who else is Southgate going to pick?! Looking forward to England actually having to attack as well!

Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology is set to be used at Wembley for the first time in tonight's England v Germany friendly, and is also in the news following the controversial penalty awarded against Northern Ireland in their play-off defeat to Switzerland.

For anyone still not sure how the VAR system works, BBC Sport has examined how it might have saved England from one of football's most historic injustices.

  16. Ronaldo out as Portugal face Saudi Arabiapublished at 19:48 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November 2017

Portugal v Saudi Arabia (20:45 GMT)

Portugal play Saudi Arabia tonight at 20:45 in the Estadio do Fontelo. The European Champions, who topped Group B for World Cup qualifying, have scored a total of 17 goals in their last six matches.

It’s a somewhat risky Portuguese squad that leaves out most their regular starters, including Cristiano Ronaldo. Portuguese coach Fernando Santos has given Ronaldo, Ricardo Quaresma and Nani a two-week rest.

Milan’s Andre Silva will play tonight, and the 22-year-old is the only man in his squad to have scored more than five international goals. He’s particularly impressed in the last three of the side’s international matches, scoring 11 goals for Portugal in 17 games, so will be confident tonight against the Saudis, who only qualified on goal difference.

Manchester City’s Bernado Silva will be joined by former City youth player Rony Lopes (Monaco).

It’s a chance for a younger generation of Portuguese players to impress; João Mario (Inter Milan), Danilo Pereira (FC Porto), Bruma (RB Leipzig), Martins(Sporting Lisbon) will play midfield, with Barcelona rightback Nelson Semedo, Pepe (Beşiktaş), Neto (Fenerbahçe SK) and Antunes (Getafe CF) defending.

OB Harris: Very underwhelming. Our midfield in terms of quality is at its lowest for many many years

Johnny Magrinho: This England team won't be anything like this in Russia & completely ignores our talented young players. No wonder so many players are 'injured' right now - what's the point in playing in this game? What's the point in this game at all? What a colossal waste of time.

Thom Hamilton: They must be rubbing their hands in the German dressing room!

Andrew Stacey: England fans - managers need to experiment more and not just use the same old, usual suspects. Give youth a chance.

Also England fans - this team is worst ever with no experience!

  18. Star-studded Belgian squad face Mexicopublished at 19:44 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November 2017

    Belgium v Mexico (19:45 GMT)

After an impressive qualifying campaign, Belgium will hope to continue their winning streak as they face Mexico this evening in a friendly in Brussels.

The Belgian side won all five qualifying matches and topped Group H by nine points.

Mexico have also secured their spot in next summer’s finals, after they finished top of the Concacaf table with 21 points from 10 games.

13 Premier League players are in Belgium’s squad – Thibaut Courtois (Chelsea) and Simon Mignolet (Liverpool) are in goal, with Christian Kabasele (Watford) and Jan Vertonghen (Tottenham) defending.

The squad also includes Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City), Nacer Chadli (West Brom), Steven Defour (Burnley), Mousa Dembele (Tottenham) in midfield, and Romelu Lukaku (Manchester United), Michy Batshuayi (Chelsea), Eden Hazard (Chelsea), Laurent Depoitre (Huddersfield) and Kevin Mirallas (Everton) attacking.

    England kit

England will wear blue for tonight’s friendly against Germany. Of course England wore red against West Germany on their greatest ever day, but Gareth Southgate is hoping his youthful ‘boys in blue’ can make their own history over the months and years to come.
