A quick glance at the team sheets will tell you all you need to know about the gulf between France and Wales where strength in depth is concerned.

Leaving to one side the attacking riches in the French starting line-up, even the Les Bleus bench includes players from Real Madrid, Tottenham and Manchester United.

By contrast, Welsh withdrawals mean their substitutes play for clubs such as Barnsley and Bristol Rovers.

Johnny Spencer: Those moaning about England selection - it's a friendly and the seniors have been useless for some time, time for some youth.

Sureditch: A worse England team? Have you forgotten Iceland?

Jack Wilkins: Might be inexperienced but much of this team is our future. It’s a friendly and we’ve had a lot of dropouts. Don’t be worried.

Michael Fallon: These guys haven't even played with one another yet, at least give them a chance!

  4. Southgate's key questionspublished at 19:28 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November 2017

    England v Germany (20:00 GMT)

    John Murray
5 live football correspondent at Wembley

As part of our build up on 5 live tonight, we are asking what the big question is Gareth Southgate has to find the answer to before the World Cup.

In my view it is - how can he turn England into an effective tournament team?

How much these friendlies against Germany and Brazil, and the others the FA lines up from March onwards, will help with that is highly debatable.

Particularly given the raft of withdrawals he’s had to contend with for these matches.

It is something Southgate has known from the outset he has to find the solution to, and the problem is that he and we will only discover if he has when the World Cup unfolds.

Let us know what you think the big questions facing the manager are on #bbcfootball.

Harry Wright: Rooney has more caps then the entire team combined. Inexperienced when the Germans are seriously not messing about.

Lee Sykes: I'm quite excited to see young players who are playing well get there chance. And let's not forget this isn't an easy friendly

Paddy Emmerson: Absolutely no balance or creativity in the England starting line up. It really is looking like Southgate is out of his depth.

It's such a big occasion tonight and the debutants are not going to have that protection of the experienced players to guide them through it.

If it does go the wrong way, I'm hoping we're not going to tell the debutants they're not good enough.

Amy: I think the England squad is decent, due to the withdrawals, but I was hoping for Rashford to start But seeing as he’s on the bench, a half time substitution maybe?

Spindley Bobbins: Delighted to see Pickford get a start. Has earned it, and we need more than one keeper with international experience in the team.

Jack Naisbitt: Lack of ambition and talent in that selection. Would love someone to show me a worse England team in history?

  10. Team newspublished at 19:09 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November 2017

    France v Wales (20:00 GMT)

Wales manager Chris Coleman makes two changes from October’s World Cup qualifying defeat against the Republic of Ireland. Wales revert to their favoured 3-4-2-1 formation as Neil Taylor returns at left wing-back at the expense of forward Tom Lawrence, while striker Sam Vokes replaces the injured Hal Robson-Kanu.

France manager Didier Deschamps makes five changes from the 2-1 win over Belarus in their final World Cup qualifier in October. Steve Mandanda replaces the injured Tottenham keeper Hugo Lloris in goal, while in defence right-back Christophe Jallet comes in for Djibril Sidibe, Arsenal centre-back Laurent Koscielny replaces Raphael Varane and left-back Layvin Kurzawa takes the place of Lucas Digne. Paris St-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe also replaces Thomas Lemar.

Wales XI: Hennessey; Gunter, Chester, Williams, Davies, Taylor; Allen, Ledley, King, Ramsey; Vokes.

France XI: Mandanda; Jallet, Koscielny, Umtiti, Kurzawa; Matuidi, Tolisso; Mbappe, Griezmann, Coman; Giroud.

  14. Low key England? Not for somepublished at 18:58 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November 2017

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Wembley

England v Germany at Wembley is a fixture steeped in history and meaning - even if it is a friendly.

And while there is no question its currency has been devalued by withdrawals from England's squad, try telling that to Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and two players on loan from Chelsea, Swansea City's Tammy Abraham and Crystal Palace's Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who get their first senior caps tonight.

It may not be the team England manager Gareth Southgate wanted to select against Germany but it still has the power to be very informative as he plots his plans for next summer's World Cup in Russia.

Gareth Southgate hands debuts to three players - Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Tammy Abraham and Jordan Pickford, with England playing 3-5-2.

This is the least experienced England side in 37 years.

A total of 101 caps, the lowest since Australia in 1980 when a total of 57 caps took to the field.

  17. England squad dropoutspublished at 18:53 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November 2017

    England v Germany (20:00 GMT)

OK, let's be honest, this is not the ideal England squad with which you would go into a game against Germany as you begin your preparations for a World Cup.

No Kane, no Alli, no Sterling, no Henderson. Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland pulled out of the squad on Thursday after breaking his finger in training and Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater declined a call-up as he did not feel yet ready following injury.

However, Gareth Southgate has dismissed claims that there is any kind of club v country issue at work...

    Media caption,

'Club vs country' is nonsense - Southgate

And here is the team he has picked to face the Germans...
