GOAL - Man United 1-0 Stokepublished at 9 mins

    Antonio Valencia

    He doesn't score tap-ins!

What a goal that is. Paul Pogba nonchalantly shrugs off Stephen Ireland in midfield and flicks a pass out to captain Antonio Valencia on the right. Young Stoke left-back Josh Tymon shows him inside on to his left foot, not unreasonably perhaps, but the Ecuadorian responds by bending a beauty into the top corner with his swinger.

That's a penalty for me. It's a great ball in from Juan Mata. Moritz Bauer has gone to ground and taken Anthony Martial with him. I think the referee should have given that.

Moritz Bauer has made a bright start, tackling Luke Shaw now. Stoke are playing a 4-2-3-1 with Xherdan Shaqiri and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting wide.

How polite from new man Moritz Bauer. He fouls Paul Pogba and then goes out of his way to chase the France midfielder to shake his hand.

Stoke's blue away kit is top class, let's start with that. Big fan.

Stoke have names a much more attacking line up than most were expecting, and the visitors are starting with a spell of possession.

Where will he end up this season?

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho on the omission of Henrikh Mkhitaryan from the squad tonight.

"I would lie if I said it was just a tactical decision. Just a choice of the players that we know in this moment they have 100% their heads in Manchester United and no doubts about the future.

"I don’t think it is easy for a player to play when there are doubts about his future. It is pressure a player doesn’t need - it is best for him and us while the doubt is in the air."

If Alexis Sanchez does sign for Manchester United he's a good signing, he can play anywhere across the top. He works hard, he's a Jose Mourinho type player. When he picks the ball up we know what he can do.

If I was Sanchez I'd wait until the end of the season. Chile haven't qualified for the World Cup, he's got all summer to see what offers come in.

As a free transfer he'll have the pick of the world's clubs. It's strange if he's pushing for a transfer this month.

It looks an attacking line up from Stoke for Eddie Niedwiecki’s one and only game as Stoke manger.

The new man Paul Lambert will be sitting a few seats from us in the directors' box and he’ll get an idea of the size of the task ahead of him tonight.

I wonder if he’ll be tempted to pop his head around the dressing room door at half or full time. You’d expect United to close the gap on Man City tonight to a mere 12 points, the last Stoke win here was back in 1976. It’s hard to see any other outcome.

When I went to Tottenham we could not handle Cyrille Regis, he was an ideal centre-forward for the time. He was so powerful. He could pick it up on halfway and he'd be off.

I met him a few times, but he was a lovely bloke and it's a sad loss. He was a great centre-forward to watch. You always thought something was going to happen.
