Tributes pour in after death of former West Brom star Cyrille Regis

Very sad news today with the news that Cyrille Regis has died aged 59 after falling ill on Sunday night.

He was "one of the great symbols of the fight against racism" and "a pioneer for black footballers" across the world, West Brom say.

Leading the tributes to Regis, the club describe him as "the iconic figurehead of the legendary 'Three Degrees' team of the late 1970s".

Regis, who won five England caps, played alongside Laurie Cunningham and Brendon Batson at The Hawthorns.

His widow Julia said he was "a beautiful man and a wonderful husband, father, grandfather brother and uncle".

He is survived by his two children, Robert and Michelle, and three grandchildren Jayda, Renee and Riley.

David Moyes, Roy Hodgson, Alan Pardew, Paul Lambert, Tony Pulis, Nigel Adkins, Sam Allardyce, Alan Pardew...

The list of appointments in the top two divisions this season is heavily loaded with experience, yes, but also er, failure?

Are top clubs too risk averse when naming new managers now? Or have the likes of Remi Garde, Bob Bradley and Pepe Mel scared chairmen into going for the 'safe' options?

Roy Hodgson has certainly shut me up this season though. What a job he is doing...

Let me know your thoughts on the old guard/new blood debate.

How would you have reacted had your club appointed Paul Lambert? Is he a good choice for Stoke?

    Who else was there?

Yes, today's news is that Stoke City have appointed former Aston Villa and Norwich boss Paul Lambert as manager.

The 48-year-old Scot has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract after Mark Hughes was dismissed this month.

Stoke are 18th in the Premier League table, a point away from safety, and were knocked out of the FA Cup by League Two side Coventry City.

How did he get the job? Well, he could start work today.

A penny for Paul Lambert's thoughts.

Sacked by Wolves after finishing 15th in the Championship last May, and last in charge of a Premier League game almost three years ago, he probably didn't have much in his diary for a cold Monday night in January.

And now, quite literally out of nowhere, he's back in charge in the top flight. At Old Trafford, no less.

He's only watching from the stands tonight, but it's a new era for Stoke. And one which starts with the club in the relegation zone.
