  1. CLOSE!published at 45 mins

    Chelsea 2-0 Newcastle

Not for the first time Jonjo Shelvey forces a good save from range.

Being 2-0 down is harsh on Newcastle. They've been decent enough. You just get the feeling Chelsea are in third gear and can inject some pace when they need to.

  2. goal

GOAL - Chelsea 2-0 Newcastlepublished at 44 mins

    Michy Batshuayi

What number will Chelsea be in the draw bag then?

Moments after they almost gift Newcastle a route back into the game they effectively end it.

Pedro again gets the move flowing, his pass sets Eden Hazard on a mission to run at the away defence who are in big trouble.

Michy Batshuayi is in support. He fakes to run across his man but peels away, allowing Hazard to slide him in. Shot, big looping deflection off Jamaal Lascelles and it's 2-0. The ball looped over Karl Darlow.

  3. CLOSE!published at 42 mins

    Chelsea 1-0 Newcastle

Not for the first time Chelsea give the ball away near their own goal. Marcos Alonso is not punished as Javier Manquillo crosses into the first man.

But wait, Danny Drinkwater instantly overplays himself and Jonjo Shelvey will shoot from 20 yards... good low save needed.

    Chelsea causing their own problems.

  4. CLOSE!published at 40 mins

    Chelsea 1-0 Newcastle

I must admit I didn't fancy him here, but what do I know.

Antonio Rudiger joins an attack and has space to run into. He shapes to shot from 35 yards but dummies, flummoxing Jonjo Shelvey. Rudiger is all arms and legs, he looks uncomfortable this far up the pitch but he unleashes a fine, bending effort with the left peg.

It's a fraction wide and the keeper was a postcode away from it.

And yet the big man can't get a game in the league.

    Chelsea 1-0 Newcastle

Eden Hazard has not been all over the ball but when he gets it he's head and shoulders above anyone on the pitch. If he sees a little more ball this will not prove a contest for long.

He weaves some space and tries a cheeky reverse pass to get Michy Batshuayi in again, prompting desperate defending to concede a corner.

  7. Postpublished at 36 mins

    Chelsea 1-0 Newcastle

Dwight Gayle manages to slip Antonio Rudiger briefly and holds off the defender to drill a low left-footed shot across goal. That's routine for Willy Caballero though.

  8. 'Hazard movement great'published at 14:07 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2018

    Chelsea 1-0 Newcastle

    Martin Keown
Former Arsenal defender on Radio 5 live

You have to say what a ball that is from Pedro, but the movement from Hazard is great - he makes a great run on the shoulder of the defender. The other important player in that move is Alonso, what a run he makes into the area, and Batshauyi who has almost been a passenger in this game so far gets the goal. He needs goals and hopefully that will give him confidence.

    Chelsea 1-0 Newcastle

A brilliant, brilliant cross flashes across the Chelsea goal. Massadio Haidara has hit a few of those today. No one attacking it. Where is Alan Shearer when you need him? He'd have dined out on that one.

    A good response though.

  10. goal

GOAL - Chelsea 1-0 Newcastlepublished at 31 mins

    Michy Batshuayi

A simple finish from eight yards for Michy Batshuayi but this owes much to Pedro.

The Spaniard's sublime ball splits the Newcastle defence and gets them chasing shadows. It allows Eden Hazard to slip a ball inside to Marcos Alonso who toes the ball first-time to Batshuayi, who cannot miss.

That old saying - 'like a knife through butter'. That's the one for this goal.

  11. Get it wide...published at 14:01 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2018

    Chelsea 0-0 Newcastle

It's all about the flanks for Chelsea. Davide Zappacosta down the right, Marcos Alonso down the left.

Alonso has had 40 touches in 28 minutes and no one on the field is close to that mark.

Jack Richardson: There were a few years I didn't really follow football that much and it was when 442 became 4231. I was completely lost when I returned for a couple of weeks, whatever happened to big and little up top?

It's all about a back three now Jack. As today shows. As i said earlier, let's go 1-1-8.

Sam Turton: Gayle might well be the worst Newcastle number 9 in history.

Kyle: Good start from Newcastle. However when Gayle gets chances like that he has to be more clinical.

  13. CLOSE!published at 24 mins

    Chelsea 0-0 Newcastle

The closest we've been to a goal as Willy Caballero tips Jonjo Shelvey's volley around the post.

Shelvey was in the box and guided a fine Massadio Haidara cross at the near post, forcing Caballero to get down low.

    Chelsea 0-0 Newcastle

As you can see, there's not a lot in it in the opening 20 minutes or so.

    "Rafa, Raf-ael, Rafa, Raf-ael...."

The away contingent sing. They've seen enough to be hopeful. Here come their side again...

  15. Postpublished at 22 mins

    Chelsea 0-0 Newcastle

Dwight Gayle is fuming.Newcastle pounce high up the pitch as Chelsea overplay and briefly it looks like the away side are in. Matt Ritchie plays the ball between defenders for Gayle but there's not enough on it, so Gayle looks to lay Ritchie back in. It allows the home side to clear.

A chance wasted. Better care with either pass would have created a good opening.

  16. 'Newcastle sitting deep'published at 13:52 Greenwich Mean Time 28 January 2018

    Chelsea 0-0 Newcastle

    Martin Keown
Former Arsenal defender on Radio 5 live

The way Newcastle are set up, the worry from their point of view is if they do concede how are they going to get back into it? Because they do look quite comfortable at the moment.

They're engaging really well the Newcastle players, everyone seems to know what their role is but it almost seems to be damage limitation as they're defending that deep.

  17. Postpublished at 20 mins

    Chelsea 0-0 Newcastle

Michy Batshuayi's eyes light up as Eden Hazard heads a ball down for him but Jamaal Lascelles stoops to just about head clear. Important intervention.

    Chelsea 0-0 Newcastle

    George Cummins
BBC Radio 5 live at Stamford Bridge

We thought Newcastle were going three at the back but they have tricked us all.

Newcastle's official twitter feed has them playing 5-3-1-1.

The visitors have started well so far.

    Chelsea 0-0 Newcastle

Eden Hazard free-kick, into the wall. Good resistance from the away side but suddenly there's a bit of a swarm going on of their area as Chelsea come forward again and they win another corner as Massadio Haidara blocks a cross.

  20. YELLOW CARDpublished at 17 mins

    Chelsea 0-0 Newcastle

Newcastle have four wins in their last 20 games but they've started quite well here. Plenty of commitment and energy about them. There are a lot of bodies dotted in midfield, minimising space. Eden Hazard picks the ball up wide left, lovely dummy and jink to drop Chancel Mbemba. The big defender dives in, that's a hack on Hazard and a booking.

    Free-kick, edge of the box.
