Chance for Tottenham. Christian Eriksen's free-kick is half-cleared to Moussa Dembele, 25 yards out, and he hits a good low strike that Loris Karius holds. It's Tottenham's first shot on target.

    Robbie Savage

Why are Spurs constantly trying to play it out?

It's not working. The front three of Liverpool are just pushing and pressing the back four of Spurs. It's just not working for Spurs.

    Liverpool 1-0 Tottenham

What's Dejan Lovren doing up there? The Liverpool centre-back suddenly joins the attack, getting down the right to deliver a cross that Vertonghen clears. Lovren has been very good so far; that nightmare against Tottenham in October is disappearing fast.

Watching Liverpool v Spurs in an Irish pub in New York, with Espanyol v Barcelona on other screens. There really is no comparison between the Premier League and La Liga in terms of pace, excitement and endeavour. Why anyone raves about the Spanish league is beyond me

Trent Alexander-Arnold is getting forward at every opportunity down the right for Liverpool. Emre Can feeds him to deliver a cross which is blocked, but the full-back remains forward, eventually running into a wall of Tottenham shirts.

    Liverpool 1-0 Tottenham

Another Liverpool free-kick. Salah again delivers from the left, an inswinger, and again Van Dijk gets his head to it, but Hugo Lloris gets down to hold the header. Tottenham's defending from set-pieces not good at the moment.

Oletum MR: It is a joy watching some of these teams play, Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal and Man City, all managers who believe in playing entertaining football. Beautiful.

Spudlud: Poch needs to show he’s not every players ‘chum’ and flog Dier in the summer. That’ll show them he means business. All seems too ‘pally’ at spurs between boss and players.

Mo Salah leads a break for Liverpool after a spell of defending, and is fouled by Eric Dier. Salah takes the free-kick himself, and Virgil van Dijk - Liverpool's matchwinner against Everton in the FA Cup last month - gets above Dier and heads over.

There is a lot of head scratching at the possession stats so far. To the naked eye, Tottenham have hardly touched the ball and Liverpool are dominated, but the numbers tell a different story 58.5% to 41.5% in Tottenham's favour.

Jurgen Klopp - no surprise here - is all action in his technical area. Delight one minute then exasperation the next as Liverpool have one of those mad 25 seconds in defence.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has just gone for a little jog along the touchline and stops in front of the Spurs fans - with inevitable results as the former Arsenal man gets a colourful reception

Harry Kane has chance to go at Liverpool's defence, finally. He works space just outside the box and hits a shot that is deflected away for a corner. The set-piece comes in, and Loris Karius punches clear. Liverpool have done just about everything right defensively to this point.

Penalty appeal now from Tottenham, as Eric Dier claims a pull as he tries to latch on to a loose ball in a goalmouth scramble following a corner. Jon Moss isn't convinced; he thinks Virgil van Dijk and Dejan Lovren were doing their jobs fairly.

Not seen a whole from Harry Kane at all so far. He had one touch in the first 15 minutes, he has still only had four.

Jordan Henderson sends Mo Salah away down the right as Tottenham give the ball away. The Egypt international stands up a cross aiming for the far post, but keeper Hugo Lloris pulls the ball out of the air.

It's been absolutely brilliant, end to end stuff.

Spurs have a chance then Liverpool have a chance.

Van Dijk has been absolutely brilliant. Liverpool have been been missing a leader, and he certainly is one.

Another great ball from Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has had a fine start. Roberto Firmino gets in between Vertonghen and Sanchez, but cannot glance the header in - the ball runs wide.

A great pace about this match; it feels like the last 10 minutes of a cup tie. Tottenham full-back Ben Davies goes clattering into Trent Alexander-Arnold, to fury from the home fans. Referee Jon Moss rules it a full-blooded but fair challenge.

Plenty of positive attacking from both sides. Trent Alexander-Arnold's lovely pass from the right sends James Milner away to whip a shot across the keeper, and it is deflected just beyond the far post.

From the resulting corner, Alexander-Arnold fires in a shot that Mo Salah cannot quite divert into the goal.

Once again Dier gets it wrong. He is a liability for spurs and hope he isn’t chosen for England in the summer. Dier by name dire by performance

Liverpool have made plenty of fast starts before at Anfield and this is another one as Tottenham are hassled and hurried out of their stride.

Spurs have not had a chance to settle down yet - not helped by that horrible defensive error by Eric Dier.

Mauricio Pochettino's plan would have been to ensure Liverpool did not gather momentum. He has seen his side give them the perfect start.
