Newport County manager Michael Flynn, speaking to BBC: "It was always going to be difficult. It was a good start in the first 25 minutes, but the manner of the goal, the way it went in, it took it out of the boys and deflated them.

"I am very proud of the players and very proud of the players this evening. They put in a huge amount of work and they have done themselves and the club proud and we should have scored at the end.

"I want to keep progressing in the league and keep progressing year in, year out. We have time to add to the squad and improve things."

Newport County goalkeeper Joe Day, speaking on BBC Radio 5 live: "It is a great effort from the lads. There is no shame in losing 2-0 to them. I am proud of the team and proud of the lads.

"The game plan was to stay in the game for as long as we could, but with a [first goal] like that, it is unfortunate. I have gone for the line of the ball and it has taken a deflection.

"We can take a lot of confidence. Over two legs against Tottenham we have held our own for the majority of the game."

Paul Collins: Spurs are frustrating. They are so good to watch but they never win a trophy, they waste too many chances and their players throw themselves down like they've been shot at slightest.

Vincent Tan: I thought Son should get man of the match. He's just a delight to watch. Whenever he gets the ball, you'll sit up knowing that something will happen.

The story is about Newport with the replay and the finances, but Spurs were professional. They wanted to go into the next round and they wanted to go to Rochdale and Mauricio Pochettino wants to win the FA Cup.

Newport can be proud. The scoreline is respectful, but it could have been worse if Tottenham had been more clinical.

So that's it. Tottenham are through to the next round.

There was no giant killing and no goal celebrations for the travelling Newport fans in Wembley but their team were able to hold out in that second half.

Spurs missed a whole host of chances after the break - can they afford to do the same against Arsenal this weekend?

    Tottenham 2-0 Newport County

    John Hartson
Former Wales striker on 5 Live

Spurs were too good for them after the first 10 minutes when Newport started well, they looked up for it in the first 10 minutes. But after that own goal from Dan Butler which put Spurs in front, from then they have controlled the game. They have missed several good opportunities to score and the score could have been worse for Newport. But they go away respectful and they can be proud the game has finished 2-0. Spurs at times have been outstanding with their movement.
