The one issue I have with Thibaut Courtois comments, is that he said, 'he didn't expect the shot from Lionel Messi,' but isn't that his job?

It was either going to be a shot or a cross for the first goal. He's admitted his mistakes but I was really disappointed with him tonight.

  3. 'I have to be a man'published at 22:43 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2018

    Chelsea

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois tells BT Sport:"I don't think we deserve to be out, but individual mistakes cost us in both legs. The first goal, I didn not expect Lionel Messi to shoot from that angle and I was too late in closing my legs. It was a mistake on my part.

"There were missed passes from us and they scored from our mistakes. We defended and played well, hit the crossbar which was unlucky on our side but the individual mistakes cost us. We have to be honest about that.

"I played against Messi a lot of time, I have already conceded goals like that before The weakest point is between the legs or a goalkeeper, it is annoying, I cannot hide inside, I have to be a man and come out. I made some good saves too but we go out with conceding four goals from four mistakes."

He did have the courage to front up to the cameras after the game though.

I would say this is the defining period of the season for Chelsea - I agree that they played OK tonight but they were beaten by the best player that's ever played on the planet.

Lionel Messi was astonishing over the tie - he had a hand in all of the Barcelona goals either scoring or making the goals.

The first goal looks a good goal but it's a one two and if you don't know that Barcelona play one two's and follow them it's a terrible error.

With most great players there is a chance you will concede when you make a mistake, when Lionel Messi is around and you make a mistake, you will lose a goal. You just have to accept that at this rarefied level.

The right team went through because they have special players and a special player.

  11. Who is signing the players at Chelsea?published at 22:29 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2018

FT: Barcelona 3-0 Chelsea (agg: 4-1)

    Charlie Adam
Stoke City midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

The biggest problem you have at Chelsea is who is signing the players? There was Michael Emenalo who went to Monaco and that is probably Antonio Conte's biggest argument.

Whoever comes in will want full control [of recruitment]. If they bring in Luis Enrique will he be happy to just coach the team?

Jamie: Never seen Antonio Conte smile after losing a game, but even he had to ruefully smile when shaking Leo Messi's hand at the end.

Philipp: Much rather lose at the Camp Nou by 3, than at Old Trafford against Sevilla. Best I’ve seen the blues play in a long time. Can’t excuse defensive errors, but should give confidence in the league.

David M: If Chelsea keep hold of Conte, it'll be a successful season.

I just wonder where Chelsea and Antonio Conte go from here? It was only two years ago they were tenth in the Premier League and Conte transformed the team and they won the Premier League, so things can change.

The question is will the owner accept fifth place under Conte with all the other issues, and the chances are he won't be there at the end of the season

We've seen two responses in two night's from two managers that have been really surprising - an acceptance of what this is [losing] and I don't think that is right.

  15. 'No regrets'published at 22:17 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2018

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, speaking to BT Sport: "Tonight in the two legs, Lionel Messi made the difference. We are talking about the best player in the world. Over the two legs we were a bit unlucky. We hit the post four times. In our best moment today they scored.

"They were very clinical. We created many chances. We are talking about a player (Messi) that every season he scores 60 goals. We are talking not about a top player but a super top player. He made the difference.

"We have no regrets. I must be pleased for the commitment. They gave everything tonight. We didn't deserve to lose 3-0. During the game, from the bench and for me it was a clear penalty on Marcos Alonso. We have to go and move on and to prepare for the game against Leicester on Sunday."

Hayden King: Poor defensive errors cost us this tie, we gave it our all but we lacked that ruthlessness in front of goal tonight, a game where a top quality striker could have changed this game.

Connor Vallor: Leo Messi brilliant again can’t afford to make mistakes against a team like that at the Camp Nou!

Nishant Punia: Marcus Alonso, today, made a strong case for his selection into Spanish national team. Cesar Azpilicueta didn’t do any favours to his.

I think Chelsea over the two legs have performed pretty well.

They had a plan at home that worked until the big mistake from Andreas Christensen. Then tonight it was just unbelievable basic errors that cost them.
