The Premier League leaders versus a League One side does, on paper at least, appear to be a total mismatch, but Manchester City are really going to have to work hard to score tonight.

The Latics boast one of the most miserly defences in English football, having conceded just 18 goals in 30 league games this season.

    The ones that got away

So Wigan missed out on Pep Guardiola, who are the big name players who almost signed on the dotted line for your club but ultimately never did, and why did the deal fail to happen?

One of my favourite tales is Robert Lewandowski coming close to signing for Blackburn, but a volcanic ash cloud meant his flight to the UK was cancelled and the move never happened.

If things had turned out differently, this could have been a game against a former club for Pep Guardiola.

The Manchester City boss and former Barcelona midfielder was offered a contract by Wigan back in September 2005 but the Latics never heard back from him.

Incidentally, Guardiola had turned down the chance to play for City that summer.

    What might have been...

When I looked at yesterday's game, Tottenham went to Rochdale, who are bottom of League One and got a draw. Manchester City come to Wigan, who are near the top of League One and you think, maybe...

But even with that it is a massive ask, you are asking for a miracle for Wigan to get anything out of it. Manchester City just have that way about them where they can take the stuffing out of you.

Wigan have a tough, tough job tonight.

Manchester City's quest for the quadruple continues.

It seems hugely unlikely that a team beaten by Southend and Blackpool in the last 10 days could upset the serene procession to legendary status that has been City's season so far - but who thought Wigan could topple City in the 2013 Cup final, and beat them again in the last eight in 2014?

Wigan's last two results have seen them lose top spot in League One, and have damaged a previously superb defensive record. Confidence is bound to be shaken, after they had made winning games look so straightforward for so long.

But with some of the heroes of 2013 there to watch, and cheered on by what's likely to be their biggest crowd in almost five years, who could deny the Latics the chance to dream big again?

    11 May 2013.

That's a date that will live long in the memory for Wigan fans because that was the day they won the FA Cup.

The Latics, then of the Premier League, produced one of the greatest upsets in the competition's long history by beating Manchester City 1-0 at Wembley.

Now two divisions apart the two sides meet again, this time at Wigan's DW Stadium and for a place in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Will Wigan recreate their FA Cup heroics once again?

  12. History to repeat?published at 18:29 Greenwich Mean Time 19 February 2018

Did you know Dave Whelan once broke his leg in an FA Cup final?

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's a little known fact about the former Wigan chairman. If the Latics do manage to go all the way in the competition this year, he might just bring that little tale up for those who have missed it.

But that's a treat for later. First, Wigan are going to have do the seemingly unthinkable - beat Manchester City.

But they do have form when it comes to that...
