It is cold and windy in St Petersburg. It isn’t stopping the fans from posing for pictures. Big queues all around the stadium as supporters queue to get in, but it is very friendly. The Egyptians no doubt excited to see Mohammed Salah on the team sheet.

Even bigger noise from the Russia fans for their anthem. Playing in a home World Cup must be amazing. Well playing in any World Cup would be.

National anthems time. Some big noise from the Egypt fans for theirs. The African side have never won a World Cup game. But they've never had Mohamed Salah in a World Cup team before.

  8. 'Cherchesov is what Russia need right now'published at 18:53 British Summer Time 19 June 2018

Sergei Kiriakov, a former USSR and Russia team-mate, of Stanislav Cherchesov has backed the head coach.

"He has experience abroad, he won the league and cup double in Poland," Kiriakov told BBC World Service.

"He’s very ambitious. He wants to beat everything in his life. He’s tough, a strict disciplinarian. That’s what Russia need at the moment. He will be judged by results. Today’s game is probably the most important. He doesn’t tolerate indiscipline."

Mohamed Elneny is the one who makes things tick for Egypt. Even at Arsenal, he likes to keep it simple and plays side-to-side which can sometimes be seen as negative but in this team they really need that.

He's playing with lesser players than he's used to and he can become frustrated at times but he remains positive for his nation and is the one with quality in there.

He will look for Mo Salah and will be an important figure for them today.

Mohamed Salah has been fantastic for Liverpool. He brings hard work and when he goes you cannot stop him, he is off.

Considering what he has done this year, nobody expected it but if Egypt want to do something they need to win and Salah needs to be at his best.

  13. Russia's World Cup pedigreepublished at 18:44 British Summer Time 19 June 2018

Russia have not progressed from the group stages of a World Cup in their three tournaments - 1994, 2002 and 2014 - since the end of the Soviet Union.

They have already scored more goals in the 2018 World Cup - in one game - than they managed in 2014 (two) or 2002 (four).

Russia/USSR have not won the second game of a World Cup in five tournaments - 1982 was the last time they managed it.

Against Uruguay, Egypt were good to a point but they lacked belief and this guy doesn't just bring belief to the team but to the whole nation.

Fingers crossed for Egypt, and all of us watching, that his shoulder holds up and we see the best of Mo Salah.

is a top guy, very quiet but not on the pitch this year.

It did not surprise me how well he has done to be honest, I saw little things at Chelsea but he had no confidence.

But he showed when someone trusts you and believes in you, can exploit your qualities, he can be great. I did not think he had that many goals in him though.

I'm absolutely delighted to see Mo Salah included with the season he's had. Even if he was 75% fit it was a gamble they had to take.

Russia lack pace so that's probably one of the reasons he's playing and they'll look to exploit it.

Mohamed Salah won the Premier League golden boot and reached the Champions League final in his first season for Liverpool

Egypt boss Hector Cuper: "Salah is one of the best players in the world. He is in the top 10 today for me, there's no shadow of a doubt there. It's an honour and a privilege to coach him.

"It's great to be able to work with him because on top of being talented, he is humble, he plays as a team player and that, at least for me, is extremely important nowadays.

"He's an important player for us, obviously, nobody can deny that, and this I say with all due respect to all the other players in the Egyptian squad.

"He's definitely an important offensive weapon and I have to say when we don't have him, we feel his absence and we have to come up with alternatives to try to get the same strength in offence."

    Russia v Egypt (19:00 BST)

    Mark Lawrenson
    BBC football expert

Scoring five goals in their opening game was probably beyond Russia's wildest dreams and on the back of that win, they will be full of confidence.

I fancy them to win this one too.

Once he was passed fit, Egypt had to play Mohamed Salah, because if Russia win this game, and Uruguay beat Saudi Arabia - as I expect them to - Egypt will be out.

He will have to be careful, though, because the Russia players will target his injured shoulder.

    Prediction: 2-0 to Russia

Every tournament needs a psychic animal now for some reason. Achilles the cat, has 'predicted' Russia will win today.

He was given a bowl of food with the Russian flag and one with the Egyptian flag - and ate the Russia one first.

Although he did then go on to eat the Egypt bowl of food too. Classic cat.
