    Croatia 0-0 Nigeria

Nigeria win another free-kick. Victor Moses is once again over the ball - this time about 40 metres out - but again his floated delivery is cleared.

The Blues man will have to do better with those deliveries.

    Croatia 0-0 Nigeria

It’s like a Croatia home game in here. Red and white everywhere you look apart from a few empty blue seats in one corner.

Those wonderful Nigeria shirts are dotted around the stadium and luckily they’re the same colour as the steward's bibs so maybe they can be honorary Super Eagles supporters tonight.

  3. Postpublished at 4 mins

    Croatia 0-0 Nigeria

Eintracht Frankfurt winger Ante Rebic steams down the left and delivers a low ball intended for Ivan Perisic, but it's cleared in the nick of time by Brian Idowu.

The first little test for the Super Eagles backline.

    Verdict: Passed.

  4. 'Great chance to top the group'published at 20:02 British Summer Time 16 June 2018

    Croatia 0-0 Nigeria

    Terry Butcher
Ex-England captain on BBC Radio 5 live

I saw Nigeria play England at Wembley and the real Nigeria side didn't turn up in the first half. They came back into it in the second half and there's a great chance to top the group here after Argentina drew with Iceland.

    Croatia 0-0 Nigeria

Nigeria - in all green and no fancy patterns - win a free-kick.

Chelsea's Victor Moses dinks it into the area but it's cleared by Croatia.

The pitch looks a little rough, from my point of view.

    Is it pre-recorded?

    Chadwick: Lets go Naija.

Si: Big fan of the Croatia generation of 1994-98, ditto Nigeria’s of the same time. Neither have been as good since. My devastation at R. Baggio’s equaliser in ‘94 is still fresh in the mind.

We cannot talk about this opening match, without a quick entry on the Nigeria kit, which has already acquired cult status.

You see, wowed by the design, there was mad dash for the clothing pretty much as soon as it became available.

Three million people had actually pre-ordered the replica shirts, according to the Nigeria Football Federation, and shoppers queued outside Nike's flagship store in London a couple of weeks ago to try to get their hands on the attire.

The home and away shirts, priced at £64.95, were sold out on the sportswear giant's website soon after they were released.

The makers describe the home kit as a "subtle homage to Nigeria's '94 shirt, with its eagle wing-inspired black-and-white sleeve and green torso".

    Thoughts?

Croatia, 20th in the Fifa rankings, finished third in 1998 in what was their first appearance at the World Cup. That squad featured Suker, Bilic, Prosinecki (loved a cigarette in the shower), Boban, Jarni, Simic, Stimac, Tudor... and Silvio Maric - fondly remembered by Newcastle fans.

They have since failed to progress past the group stage in three attempts.

Nigeria are down in 48th, although I suspect they are a tad bit better than that. They have a habit of getting out of the group but then fall short at the last 16 stage - three out of five times, to be exact.

Four years ago they lost 2-0 to France in the first knockout stage.

The two teams have played each other a total of zero times previously.

I was at Croatia’s opening game of Euro 2016 when they beat Turkey and remember thinking that they have a team capable of doing something special.

Yet again though they flattered to deceive. Now I’m at their first game of Russia 2018 and I’m not sure what Croatia we’re going to get. Word from inside the camp is that they’re as confident as ever.

Rumours of splits in the squad are said to be untrue. If they click they could take control of Russia 2018’s toughest group tonight.

  20. Final warm-upspublished at 19:25 British Summer Time 16 June 2018

    Croatia v Nigeria (20:00 BST)

It looks like a nice evening in Kaliningrad - a Russian enclave between Poland and Lithuania - both sets of players are going through their final sets of shuttle runs, hops and skips.

This match kicks off at 21:00 their time, so the players should all be back in their hotels in time for the Argentina v Iceland replay on BBC One at 23:30 BST.
