Fantastic performance. Resilient, tenacious and energetic. Tunisia had a game plan but England weren't stopping until the final whistle. So proud of us and about time we delivered something like that. Roll on Panama.

    Tunisia 1-2 England

Speaking to BBC Sport, Jordan Henderson said: "It's a big win for us and it's a massive boost, but we can't get carried away. Now we have got to recover well, prepare for the next game and keep building momentum.

"We can be friends off the field but when you're on it, you're fighting for your mate next to you. We've said all along, that we have to keep going in the game even if we are down or struggling, and we did that."

Callum: Cracking end to my birthday with England nabbing a late winner against Tunisia. Bring on Panama!

Trevor: So proud of the lads tonight! Kane brilliant in front of goal, two set piece goals as well! When did England last do that in a world cup! Things to work on but what a different feeling after the first match compared to 4 years ago! Come on England!!

Imran: Snatched a win tonight. A win is a win!

Ferjani Sassi, Tunisia's goalscorer: "We played a good match defensively, and I don't think we deserved to lose. We played with five in defence during the second half which helped us to close the spaces. We will do everything against Belgium to win the three points."

  6. 'Maguire has outstanding potential'published at 22:01 British Summer Time 18 June 2018

    Tunisia 1-2 England

England manager Gareth Southgate: "The way we would change the game is to have different profiles of players that would provide a different threat. You can put attacking players in different positions but lose shape and be caught on the counter-attack.

"The guys that came on had a different threat. As a team you keep working and working. The best teams in the world keep the belief in what they're doing and in the end break teams down.

"Harry Maguire's potential is huge. Both he and Jordan Pickford have not played in cup finals and big stage Champions League matches - but he has great composure and has a calm temperament. He has outstanding potential and hope tonight has given him a lot of belief."

England boss Gareth Southgate: "We recovered well from a really harsh decision and kept our composure.

"In the second half we looked for opportunities rather than throw balls into the box.

"Our attacking set-plays were a threat all night - we got just reward for that.

"I think if it's a penalty at one end it has to be a penalty at the other. If penalties are given for that then it's going to be an interesting tournament - there were similar offences at the other end."

  9. 'We reacted well to decisions that went against us'published at 21:54 British Summer Time 18 June 2018

    Tunisia 1-2 England

England manager Gareth Southgate: "Even at 1-1 I was proud of the display. We talked a lot in the weeks leading up to the game of performance being key. There were things we couldn't control in the game that we reacted well too.

"If it finished 1-1 there would have been a level of disappointment but the performance was good. We made lots of chances in the first half."

Some of the refereeing at this tournament has been very poor and I think some of them are not good enough for this level. We are talking about elite level competition and they are just not up to standard. Fifa say one thing and do another. They have talked about clamping down on holding in the penalty box but done nothing about it.

    Tunisia 1-2 England

England manager Gareth Southgate: "As for Harry Kane the only thing he hasn't done now is score in August - he's moved every other barrier. He will feel pride of leading a country to a World Cup win is the most important thing.

"At 1-1 we had a plan - to keep looking and keep probing but don't get caught on the counter-attack.

"At the end the pressure built and built. We did right things and made good decisions and were good value for the win."

    Tunisia 1-2 England

    Terry Butcher
Ex-England captain on BBC Radio 5 live

Harry Kane is extraordinary. He is a wonderful player and a wonderful leader. The last player to score as many goals after 25 games for England was Gary Lineker. If he follows in those footsteps, he will do very well.

  17. 'We are proud of each other'published at 21:40 British Summer Time 18 June 2018

    Tunisia 1-2 England

England striker Harry Kane, speaking at the news conference: "I thought we played very well. There are always a bit of nerves, a bit of excitement, but we got into the game very quickly, it went to 1-1 and the momentum changed a bit. It is always in the back of your mind that it is not going to be your day but that is why you work for 90+ minutes.

"We wanted to create chances and we did that. We could've scored two or three goals and put the game to bed. I'm really pleased with how we played.

"Maybe a bit disappointed (to not get a penalty and for England to concede one) on the pitch their penalty looked quite soft. That is what VAR is there for. At a few corners I couldn't move. We just have to hope the officials get it right. If they don't think it is a penalty we have to deal with it.

"We are proud of each other and in a World Cup you are not sure how it is going to go, but we have a great togetherness and are always proud to see it come off in the game. We never panicked, never looked like conceding another one and got what we deserved in the end.

"We got told there would be a lot of flies and when we went out for the match it was a lot more than we though. We all had bug spray on and it was important as some of them went in your eyes, some in your mouth but it is about dealing with what comes your way."

Alex: I’m sure people will be slating that performance but we did well. Persistent and positive. They put 10 behind the ball and we found a way. 3 points in opening game when many big sides have fallen.

Bryan: Unbelievable how ridiculously biased all channels are about the Tunisia penalty. If that was the other way about they would be calling for a red card for the elbow in the face.

Si: Final verdict? England can enjoy the result but not the performance. They have to be more fluent and less laboured - better teams will not give them the space Tunisia did in the first half.
