Kane heads home winner for England

Speaking to BBC Sport, England captain Harry Kane said: "It’s what dreams are made of and I’m so proud of the lads. We played really well in the first half and deserved to take the lead. It didn’t look like a penalty for Tunisia but credit to the lads, we kept going, and that’s what it’s all about at a World Cup."

Asked about their character to equalise late on, Kane added: "We have shown that resilience for a while now and we have got a great bond off the pitch, so it’s nice to see it working on the field. I think there could’ve been a couple of penalties for us, especially when you see the one they were awarded. They tried to stop us running at corners and free-kicks, so maybe that goal at the end was justice. We have done a lot of work on the training field."

Kane took his chances in the game. Roll on to the Panama game - that allows the manager to shake it up. Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Marcus Rashford made a difference - then there's Jamie Vardy. This will breed belief. What they will see is the energy they had in the first half.

I can't stress enough the importance and confidence of Kane. He'd have been looking at Ronaldo, Griezmann over the last few days. The manager gave him the armband because he's the go-to player. The goals will have given him great confidence tonight. There's no doubt [Kane will be thinking Golden Boot] - he would have been desperate to get off to a goalscoring start.

  8. 'Kane was behind the victory'published at 21:31 British Summer Time 18 June 2018

Tunisia coach Nabil Maaloul said: "The risks came from set pieces. When you have very tall players it is very difficult to counter them. They were much better than us when it came to those high balls.

"Harry Kane is one of the best attackers in the Premier League and that is why he is highly sought after by the highest clubs. I think he was behind the victory of the English team, it was him who was always at the right time and he is the optimum scorer."

On his defenders holding Harry Kane when corners were being taken: "I have not seen those possible penalties, maybe if I go back and look at the match I can see what fouls were committed."

  9. Now to build momentum...published at 21:28 British Summer Time 18 June 2018

England defender Harry Maguire on BBC One: "The first half we should have been clear. We conceded a soft penalty - we knew we didn't want to concede the next goal. We kept our shape and 'H' has done it again.

"It was really warm, we wanted to start really well and we did. We missed clear-cut chances that you don't get much at this level.

"We knew we'd get more chances and its come right at the death."

On Harry Kane not winning a penalty: "It was as much a penalty as they got. You know 'H' is always in the right place at the right time and when he gets that chance he'll take it.

"I had a couple of nervy passes in the first half - it's a big occasion and your first game at this high pressure. You have to focus and concentrate and I feel I grew into the game.

"It's a massive three points and we can now build some momentum."

  10. 'There were positives in the first half'published at 21:26 British Summer Time 18 June 2018

    Tunisia 1-2 England

    Alan Shearer
Former Newcastle striker on BBC One

It's a great night for Southgate because he was under great pressure. He will look at his own performance. In the build up it was excellent - he knew his squad and the players knew the system. We wanted England to give us a little bit of hope - there were plenty of positives in the first half.

  11. 'A great platform'published at 21:25 British Summer Time 18 June 2018

    Tunisia 1-2 England

More from Gareth Southgate to BBC One: "We felt Raheem and Dele had caused huge problems for the opposition but it was good time to bring fresh players on.

"We’ve given ourselves a great platform to build from. There’s a lot of work to do still. We knew Tunisia would be a tough test. Panama will be tough in a different way. We can enjoy tonight – and we hope everyone at home does.

"Harry is a top, top striker. I’m delighted for him as we’d be asking questions about him not scoring in tournament football if he hadn’t scored. He took his goals really well."

  12. 'That second goal was so important'published at 21:25 British Summer Time 18 June 2018

Former England defender on BBC One

I'm delighted we're creating chances. How many times have we talked about how bereft of ideas England teams have been? We are getting in and the right things are being done. Now let's be clinical. Do not underestimate how important that second goal was - because of the pressure from home and the media.

    England

Speaking to BBC Sport, Kyle Walker said: "There were ups and downs for me personally, but I think it (the result) just shows the work we have done for the last three weeks prior to the game. The important thing is we got the three points and it's always nice to win it at the end."

Asked about Tunisia's penalty, Walker added: "In the Premier League it probably wasn't a foul, but in the World Cup it was. I got a call from Kieran (Trippier) to leave it so I tried to make myself as big as possible, and he ran into my arm. We have worked hard and all of us deserve those three points."

  15. 'Even if we drew I'd be proud'published at 21:23 British Summer Time 18 June 2018

Kane slots home to give England lead

England boss Gareth Southgate to BBC One: "I was happy of the way we kept playing even though the clock was running down. We stayed patient, we didn’t just throw the ball in the box. We deserved the win.

"We created so many clear cut chances, especially in the first half, and were in total control in the second half. We were strong on set plays all night. Even if we’d drawn, we‘d have been proud of the performance.

"We’ll do well to make as many chances in a game again in this tournament. The movement, pace, control from the back with the ball was pleasing. We wore them down. Good teams score late goals – if you dominate the ball like that the opposition tire.

"It’s difficult to highlight individuals as it was a collective performance. The squad have been brilliant. We got this result over the last three weeks, not just tonight. That’s from everyone who worked so hard together."

Johnny: Henderson was our best player tonight. Seemed to instil a certain level of calmness and composure throughout the rest of the team, especially in the second half when we really needed a leader to drag us up and over the finish line.

Ryan: So after Kane got fouled the whole way through the game, I feel it's just that he got the winner. Positive start and some good football. Let's go lads!

Mark: Two years ago Sterling played the worst ever game in an England shirt. Thought it was impossible for him to play any worse. I WAS WRONG!

England defender Kyle Walker on BBC One: "It shows the work we have put in and the togertheness in this squad. We believe in the system, we believe in ourselves.

"In the Premier League I would have got away with that [the penalty]. I got a shout to leave it and tried to leave the ball, in the future I'll just head it away.

"We played some good stuff and created a lot in the first half. We are not the finished article. I'm not a big talker, I don't like to voice my opinions but I said I will run and give everyting for this team.

"It's good to win. A pat on the back for us."

We've had the hype of the so-called, overrated golden generation who failed miserably. This time our expectations are lower, but we could be nicely surprised.

    Nick:

Surely Southgate must be bold and drop Sterling - he may be top notch for his club but he's top botch in a Three Lions shirt.

Why the uproar over Kane being held at corners? It's only what you see every week in the Premier League!
