    Tunisia 1-2 England

If NFL officials can call holding penalties - without replays and almost always correctly - why can’t a World Cup referee, two assistants, and a whole bunch of people in a truck with a bank of TVs?

    Tim, Marlow

Hendo, Harry and Trippier deserve credit, positive throughout. Someone should tell Sterling and Dele they are playing for England in a World Cup... woeful... and finally a real world-class striker in Kane.

    Matt, Kabul

Really does not matter how good or bad Tunisia were. England kept going until the final whistle and got their just reward! When was the last time we could say that about England?

  3. 'Maguire bounced back after making mistakes'published at 21:16 British Summer Time 18 June 2018

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on BBC One

Kyle Walker should have opened his body up when the first-half penalty was given so he could see the ball and the player behind him.

Harry Maguire showed personality and character to understand he made mistakes. It was about players who had the confidence to come into midfield from the back. Maguire did that in the second half.

What Marcus Rashford is is direct. What he does is ask defenders questions. He has that pace and confidence to take it to people.

Why oh why do England not push up instead of kicking the ball square across the park and back again in their own third of the pitch with no urgency and putting themselves under pressure?

    Lee

That England back three is going to get annihilated by a decent front line.

    Neil, London

No Tunisian bookings is staggering when they spent 90 minutes refusing to play football and used every dirty trick in the book. One of the worst referee performances that I've seen. Couldn't even get players to go 10 yards. And English referees weren't good enough to go?!

I think Rashford is a great option instead of Sterling. I don't see any logical reason why he wouldn't start the next game. If one starts and the other comes on as a substitute, they are great assets to have with their pace and ability, and it's exciting. Gareth has got the squad there that he can change it when he needs to.

    Tunisia 1-2 England

    Rio Ferdinand
Former England defender on BBC One

I'd say that was the major negative - the fact we weren't clinical enough with the chances. Against better teams we'll be punished. We scored in the first half and we were lucky to get a goal in the end.

It was a great start for England. Kane was sharper and brighter than anyone else and that's what you need in the World Cup.

Late goals also made a huge difference in qualifying. While it is a well done to the lads the second half performance was totally substandard.

Who else but Captain Fantastic, Harry Kane, to rescue it for England?

Kane slots home to give England lead

England captain Harry Kane to BBC One: "It’s massive. I'm so proud of the lads. It’s tough. We played so well especially in the first half and we could have scored a few more. We kept going. It's a World Cup, you go to the last second. I'm absolutely buzzing.

"We’ve done it for a while [had good resilience] since the gaffer has been here - he’s instilled it into us. We’ve got a great bond off the pitch so it’s great to see it on the pitch. We'll get onto the plane happy tonight.

"We could have had a couple of penalties, especially when you look at theirs. A few corners, they were trying to grab, hold and stop us running. Maybe a bit of justice to score at the back post at the end. That’s football, that’s the ref. It showed good character to get on with it.

"I'm really proud. We did a lot of work on training field and were itching to play. Get the nerves and excitement out of the play."

    Alan Shearer
Former Newcastle striker on BBC One

Kane wasn't allowed to go anywhere because he was been held. But he didn't moan about it. Rashford and Loftus-Cheek made a difference when they came on. I would love somebody in charge of VAR to explain why the holds on Kane in the penalty area didn't result in fouls.

  15. 'A massive boost'published at 21:05 British Summer Time 18 June 2018

    Tunisia 1-2 England

England midfielder Jordan Henderson: "It's a massive boost, a massive bonus, we kept going. We kept fightign and got the late goal and a big win.

"I felt positive at 1-1, the pace did drop off a bit. We had to keep creating chances, we didn't play as well second half but they defended deep.

"Winning the first game is always massive."

England #scrapers! Let's stop the euphoria and face it they played Tunisia not Belgium #WC2018

    Steve

Tunisia got what they deserved, nothing. Not sure I have ever seen such a negative and cynical performance at a major tournament.

    Hal, London

What can you say, it wasn't amazing from us in the second half but, at least we won, other teams haven't. Tunisia were unbelievably negative and made the game very boring. Now we can grow into tournament instead of panicking about our next game. Still must improve.

We are are where we should be. The energy in the first half was impressive and there will be teams out there who won't want to come up against them. The two substitutes were important too.

You'll have tough moments in games. If it wasn't for the chances we missed in the first half then the game would have been done and dusted.
